Job Title: COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST II Closing Date/Time: Thu. 06/22/17 11:59 PM Eastern Time Salary: $53,019.20 - $92,185.60 Annually
Job Type: Full-Time Location: 2100 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington *METRO-accessible*, Virginia       Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services (DES) is looking for a Communications Specialist II to implement and manage a comprehensive, integrated communications program that includes the following functional areas:
  • Online communications and social media;
  • Media relations;
  • Public affairs;
  • Internal communications; and
  • Marketing.
Specific duties of the position include:
  • Writing, copy editing and managing content for DES' public website using WordPress and Intranet using SharePoint;
  • Creating and managing social media posts, and monitoring and responding to department-related social media conversations by collaborating internally to ensure critical issues are handled in a timely and professional manner;
  • Developing editorial calendars and serving as an editor for department blogs;
  • Reporting on website traffic/analytics and usage data;
  • Monitoring and management of online communications, including micro-news websites, and other tools such as email marketing listservs;
  • Drafting and/or editing press releases, news and special feature articles, fact sheets, talking points and more;
  • Managing media inquiries and serving as a department spokesperson;
  • Emergency communications support and special events support; and
  • Providing technical expertise, guidance and quality assurance relating to public policy, guidelines and product output.
The successful candidate will be a member of the DES Communications Team, Countywide Communications Group, the External Relations Emergency Group and the Internet Policy Group.
 Selection Criteria: Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Public Information, Business/Public Administration or related field plus significant experience in the communications field which included the following:
  • Managing the strategy, content and layout of websites and online communications;
  • Managing a wide variety of mass media, especially social media;
  • Writing and copy editing experience, with working knowledge of Associated Press Style; and
  • Recent experience with communications technologies in web and/or information management arenas.
Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

  • Working knowledge of the following:
    • WordPress, or similar content management system, for creating websites and/or blogging;
    • Microsoft SharePoint;
    • Venngage, Canva or similar tool for creating website and social media graphics;
    • Social media monitoring and analytics tools, such as HootSuite, Google Analytics and Siteimprove;

 Additional Information: Work Hours: This is a 40 hour a week position. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for community meetings or emergencies.
