Job Title: TRAFFIC ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN Closing Date/Time: Thu. 06/29/17 11:59 PM Eastern Time Salary: $49,337.60 - $75,400.00 Annually
Job Type: Full-Time Location: 2100 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington *METRO-accessible*, Virginia       The Operations section of the Transportation Engineering & Operations (TE&O) Bureau within the Department of Environmental Services (DES) at Arlington County is seeking a highly motivated and organized candidate to handle a wide range of transportation engineering tasks to balance operational safety and access for all users of the roadway network.  This Transportation Engineering Technician position is responsible for a wide range of work that includes managing the pavement markings program, investigating and issuing right-of-way permits, and conducting transportation safety evaluations. The ideal candidate must be customer-service focused, organized, innovative, and have excellent analytical and communication skills to work independently and efficiently after receiving general guidance from supervisory staff.

Specific duties include: 
  • Evaluating and responding to pavement marking and traffic control sign requests;
  • Conducting field inspecting to approve marking layouts and traffic control signs;
  • Preparing and tracking work orders for contractors and internal staff for signage installation relating to the marking operation;
  • Ensuring compliance with Federal (i.e., MUTCD), State, and County guidelines, policies, practices, and standards for markings and signs;
  • Collecting transportation data for safety analyses, maps, and improvement plans;
  • Preparing maps, sketches, notices to proceed (NTPs) and less complex plans to refresh faded or worn pavement markings;
  • Tracking and recording yearly totals of installed pavement marking material;
  • Tracking the markings budgets, invoices, purchase orders and contract compliancy;
  • Investigating and approving transportation right-of-way permits; and
  • Coordinating transportation-related activities with Arlington's Police department for block parties and special events.

 Selection Criteria: Minimum: Possession of a high school diploma or GED, PLUS three years paraprofessional engineering experience in traffic control signage, pavement markings, or transportation operations.


Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for up to two years of the education requirement on a year-for-year basis. Completion of college courses in engineering or a directly related field may be substituted for up to one year of experience on a year-for-year basis.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates who have the following experience:
  • Familiarity with the MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices); and/or
  • Using maintenance management software such as Cass Works.

 Special Requirements: The applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record.
 Additional Information: Work Hours: This is a 40 hour a week position, with work hours generally between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
