Under general supervision, works as a crew member in the Sewer Maintenance group or the Manhole Raising group of the Wastewater Collection Division (WCD).

Sewer Maintenance: Performs a variety of duties in the cleaning and maintenance of the wastewater collection system. Assists with the setup and operation of truck-mounted sewer rodding machines and combination pressure cleaner/vacuum machines. Visually inspects sewer lines for defects and reports findings.

Pipe & Manhole Repair: Performs repairs of wastewater collection system lines, manholes, highway cave-in, VDOT paving schedules, and other related duties. Operate a pickup, crew step van, dump truck, and small engine equipment. May serve as crew leader. Ensures work is completed in accordance with VDOT specifications. Shares responsibility of job site safety, include traffic and pedestrian control.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; and two years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with wastewater collection system and repair including manhole repair, excavation, backfill, and asphalt paving. Experience working with combination unit sewer cleaners and rodders. Good communication skills. Experience using desktop or laptop computers regularly.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Possession of valid Class "B" or greater commercial driver's license (CDL) is required. The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and medical examination to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment. Flagging certification is required. The appointee must also provide a satisfactory official certified driving transcript from the state of his residence.

Note: Pre-employment, random, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing is mandatory for this position. The appointee must also show compliance with DOT drug/alcohol testing requirement requirements as demonstrated by reports from prior employers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee may be required to enter permitted confined spaces, using an OSHA, certified non-entry retrieval system, which includes a safety harness with a weight restriction of 310 pounds. All duties are performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbents within this classification are subject to the following: pre-employment physical and annual thereafter, a criminal background check and driving record check.

Subject to 24 hour call back and must, therefore, be able to work emergency overtime. Subject to working in adverse weather conditions and may be exposed to raw waste or environments generating methane gas.
