Residential Custodial Supervisor, Custodial Services Management - Facilities Management

Shift: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

The Residential Custodial Supervisor provides weekday supervisory coverage for Georgetown University's main campus, assuring that weekend visitors have clean spaces to visit and work, that student residences are provided with necessary coverage, and that events have complete and correct set-up. S/he directs building cleaning and related services - ensures that custodial staff is scheduled and assigned to various buildings and/or areas, inspects work to ensure satisfactory performance, takes action to correct deficiencies, and takes necessary steps to meet special requirements or circumstances. The Supervisor ensures that services provided are consistent and at a high level of quality through adequate training, supervision of production work, and emphasizing proper use of chemicals, equipment and the importance of quality control; and when necessary, performs the same tasks as the team members.. 

Reporting to the Manager of Custodial Services; taking director from other Facilities Management supervisors as appropriate, and supervising 10 to 15 custodial staff members who cover up to 450,000 square feet of space, the Supervisor has duties that include but are not limited to:

Custodial Services Direction

  • Directs custodial services for assigned areas, ensuring that staff has been properly scheduled, to provide cleaning and related services for assigned areas and that staffing and work schedules meet the requirements of a clean and safe living environment and academic environment for the building users.
  • Quality Service
  • Performs quality control inspections and takes actions to ensure the continuous provision of high quality custodial services within assigned area.

Customer Service

  • Serves as liaison with customers within area assigned, maintaining regular contact with staff, Manager of Custodial Services, and Residence Life and Housing Operations staffs to ensure that needs, requests, complaints and problems are addressed. 
  • Keeps employees informed of users' concerns and plans.
  • Maintains contact with other Custodial Supervisors to notify and be notified of special requests or concerns and responses that need to be attended to during the evening, night or day shift.


  • Identifies maintenance concerns and notifies maintenance staff of needed repairs.  ‘
  • Ensures that maintenance managers and the Work Management Center are notified of needed repairs within area assigned. Follows up with WMC and/or maintenance staff to stay abreast of reported maintenance issues and will be responsible for notifying the building occupants of status as required.
  • Receives information from database system for special custodial service or light maintenance requests.

Staff Training and Management

  • Trains staff on a regular cycle in cleaning methods and techniques, equipment usage, chemical usage and related aspects of custodial work. 
  • Monitors staff performance and takes actions including recommendations for additional or specialized training.  Participates in the selection of new employees. 
  • Evaluates performance of employees. Completes performance appraisal forms. 
  • Coaches, counsels and evaluates each employee on a regular basis. 
  • The incumbent will discuss with the Manager of Custodial Services performance reviews and actions to be recommended or taken.
  • When evaluating employee performance, will take appropriate steps to correct inadequate performance.
  • Takes appropriate action to deal with employee problems of absenteeism, tardiness, poor performance, and similar matters. 
  • Knows staff abilities and is able to recommend employees for appropriate awards.  Will discuss recommendations for disciplinary action with supervisor.


  • Administers key security and related aspects of building security.
  • Ensures security of keys including assigning keys for use, collecting keys at the end of the shift, and doing daily inventory of key box. 
  • Ensures that staff observes building security.  Immediately notifies supervisor of any unaccounted for keys.
  • Daily assigns and collects pagers to staff.

Inclement Weather Procedures

  • Supervises snow and ice removal. 
  • Supervises staff on appropriate action to be taken to ensure that snow and ice removal procedures provide a safe passage for those using the University.


  • High school  diploma or certified equivalency - Bachelor's degree preferred
  • 5 years of custodial experience - preference for experience in plant operation maintenance
  • Valid driver's license from District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certification
  • Ability to work as a team member, as well as to act independently and exercise mature judgement
  • Ability to read, speak and comprehend basic English for safety and quality purposes
  • Ability to analyze relevant operational issues and identify solutions
  • Willingness and availability to work hours outside as directed - for example, inclement weather or other University priorities
