The selectee for this position serves as a Firefighter (Paramedic). This position is within the Naval District Washington Fire and Emergency Services Department. The purpose of the position is to provide Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Structural Firefighting, and Airport Firefighting techniques within the Naval District Washington Fire and Emergency Services Department.

    This is a firefighter position.     ***CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR GS-09: This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Firefighter I; Firefighter II; Airport Firefighter; Hazardous Material Awareness, Hazardous Material Operations, Apparatus Driver-Operator for Pumper and Aerial Vehicles; and Current valid State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) certification. The Firefighter certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement.  If you do not possess all of the above certifications you will be rated ineligible. Copies of Certifications MUST be submitted with your application.***

    *Apparatus  Operator ARFF and Hazardous Materials Technician certifications must be obtained and maintained within 12 months of initial appointment.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE GS-09: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department brigade. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) providing fire prevention, fire protection and emergency operations; 2) performing emergency medical service and hazardous materials responses; 3) performing airfield fire control, disaster response/control and recovery.

    You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

    MAXIMUM ENTRY AGE: This position is a Primary Firefighter position and is covered under Special Firefighter Retirement.  Title 5 U.S.C. 3307 authorizes the head of an agency to establish a maximum entry age for the original appointment of individuals to the position of primary firefighter.     *Drug-testing: In accordance with Executive Order 12564, applicants selected are required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment.  In addition, this position is a drug-testing designated position (TDP) subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

    *Required to work a 72-hour week on 48-hour on/72- hour off that includes weekends and holidays.  May be subject to recall.
    *This position may require weekend/holiday work, and /or overtime work.
    *Position requires employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
    *Selectee must obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license.
    *Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.
    *May be required to participate on Hazardous Materials Teams (HAZMAT).

    *Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
