The Assistant, Major Gifts assists the Manager of Major Gifts and Director of Individual Campaigns in the planning, coordination, and execution of the Kennedy Center Annual Trustees Fund, Major Gifts Campaign, and other annual gifts to the Center’s programs and special events.  This includes research, cultivation, acquisition, stewardship, and ongoing maintenance of both unrestricted and restricted contributions.  The incumbent manages his/her time, resources, and work load to maximize productivity and financial results; exercises discretion; evaluates complex internal and external relationships; and regularly takes initiative to fulfill campaign objectives and goals. This position works in tandem with an Assistant Manager of Major Gifts and an Assistant of Individual Giving & Campaigns. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

100%   Provide support to the Assistant Manager of Major Gifts, Manager of Major Gifts, Director of Individual Campaigns and Senior Vice President for all tasks surrounding the Major Gifts Campaign, Annual Trustees Fund, and other special campaigns, including:

  • Drafting and editing all types of written materials (solicitations, acknowledgments, notes, research briefings, proposals, tax receipts, etc.) of varying length and complexity;
  • Identifying opportunities for gift increases and, in coordination with the Manager, creating detailed and personalized solicitation strategies;
  • Accurately tracking progress, ensuring completion of action items from initial discovery through acquisition, and reporting Fund progress to Manager, Director, and Senior Vice President;
  • Actively stewarding Major donors and Trustees through direct contact via phone, email, in-person, and written communication and fulfilling donor benefits;
  • Managing Board and Major donor ticket requests and pertinent event details for the Kennedy Center Honors, in addition to several other major fundraising events each season;
  • Assisting in the development of materials for Board of Trustees Development Committee meetings throughout the year;
  • Facilitating Board communication between the departments of Development and Institutional Affairs.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum of one to two years of development or related office experience required.
  • Working knowledge of the performing arts is preferred.

Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required:

  • Professional demeanor with strong interpersonal skills and superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills.
  • Self-starter with the confidence to work without close supervision, in addition to the ability to work independently on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must possess the openness and flexibility to handle challenging situations calmly and quickly.
  • Careful attention to detail with an awareness of standard accounting procedures.
  • Ability to foresee development needs and possesses the openness to work with departments across the institution..
  • A clear understanding of the Kennedy Center mission, and an understanding of the ways in which a fundraising operation works within a large and complex institution.
  • Ability to deftly manage many relationships and personality types - both internal among staff members, and external among constituents.
  • Experience with Tessitura is preferred, but any exposure to research tools is ideal.
