The Community Liaison facilitates greater community inclusion for people with disabilities through supporting them and the community to open to greater acceptance and appreciation of participating together as members of one community. This individual works with participants to build a natural support network, and cultivate connections to other individuals, groups, friends and family, while helping them realize their dreams. Community Options is currently seeking an experienced Community Liaison Specialist in Frederick, MD! Who We Are :Community Options, Inc. is a Non-Profit company which develops residential and employment supports for people with mild to severe development and physical disabilities, utilizing technology and training. We recognize that people with the most severe disabilities need environments, equipment, clinical and staff support that are tailored to their very specific needs Responsibilities: Works with the participant: Evaluates skills, and becomes familiar with and respectful of their interests, goals, dreams, capacities, lifestyle, needs, gifts, and social circle (family, friends). Identifies their employment potential, and supports them in working towards their goals. Encourages them to explore their interests in ways that can build meaningful relationships with other people in the community. Supports them in identifying individuals and groups in the community that they can meaningfully participate with. Coaches and supports them in their participation by helping them work out such issues as logistics and transportation. Advises them on what is considered appropriate behavior within different settings and circumstances. Works with the community: Increases consciousness about community inclusion within the organization and the community at large. Speaks to various organizations (COBAC, local civic and religious groups) about the joys and challenges of community inclusion. Recruits, orients, coordinates, trains, and supports volunteers and interns doing community inclusion work. Helps community members recognize the individuals gifts and find ways that they can meaningfully participant together. Educates them on the rights of people with disabilities; the need and benefits of greater inclusion; and appropriate ways to speak and respond to the person being supported. Raises consciousness about the history and reality of discrimination against individuals with disabilities, and helps dispel ignorance and fear. Encourages them to be more flexible, creative, and open, while supporting them in finding ways to make whatever changes are necessary to facilitate a meaningful and rewarding experience for them both. Requirements HS Diploma or equivalent. Minimum one year experience in social services or related field. Experience facilitating groups and supporting others in a supervisory capacity. Valid Drivers License with good driving record. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, have the ability to be positive and creative, and to identify possibilities rather than limitations and be able to bring people together in positive ways all while demonstrating excellent oral and written communication skills.
