JOB DESCRIPTIONIncumbent is responsible for supervising a full range of examinations and analyses, recording, interpreting, and reporting test results in accordance with standard processes and procedures for environmental air samples, human body fluids, tissues, clinical specimens, microbiological isolates, environmental or food samples. Essential Duties/Responsibilities:Attend initial training, demonstrate, and maintain competence in all technical areas through successful completion of quality control samples and proficiency testsEnsure all procedures are completed according to standard procedures, adhering to quality, safety, and security regulations and requirements including the Laboratory Quality Assurance Program Plan (QAPP)Perform microbiological and molecular analytical techniques, including DNA extraction and real-time polymerase chain reaction, to detect and identify multiple pathogenic organismsEnter data into computer-linked systems (LRN RM, BLaDE, SMS/DMS, Starlims)Evaluate, interpret, and review laboratory results and report findingsDemonstrate ability to communicate results in oral and written reports, assist senior scientists with troubleshooting and reporting, as requiredPreserve chain of custody during sample receipt, storage, and processing Archive samples according to an established scheduleSafely operate equipment and perform maintenance duties including calibrations and adjustmentsConduct quality control checks on laboratory methods, materials, and equipmentMaintain appropriate documentation for sample chain of custody, quality assurance/quality control, equipment maintenance and calibration, staff training records, and analytical resultsMaintain reagents and supply inventoryParticipate in evaluation of new products used in clinical/reference laboratory workAssist with preparation of epidemiological and/or statistical reports from data compiled on a daily, weekly, monthly, or annual basisAnalyze daily external QA samples in accordance with SOP's and QA program guidance for screening and confirmatory assaysTroubleshoot technical/laboratory issues in conjunction with the local Laboratory Director and/or their designeeDevelop and maintain personnel work schedulesEnsure training of new employees and competency of all laboratorians by observing personnel on a quarterly basisConduct refresher training when protocols are updated, and as requiredSupport the Local Laboratory Director in the generation and execution of a corrective action plan in accordance with the Laboratory QAPP to address any findings from the Quality Assurance program audits, proficiency tests, or data trend analysisTesting is performed 24/7/365; emergency response availability, rotating weekends, and some holidays are requiredJob Requirements:After hours, weekend and holiday workExtensive knowledge of the principles, theories and practices of microbiology and related sub- specialtiesSpecialized knowledge of current scientific methods and testing procedures and the ability to apply them when seeking solutions to public health laboratory problemsSpecialized knowledge of and ability to use a full range of standard technical equipment, complex scientific apparatus, and automated techniques of analysisExtensive knowledge of laboratory safety practices and principlesAwareness of state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and policies concerning the program areaAbility to effectively communicate technical information both verbally and in writing, and maintain productive working relationshipsAbility to satisfactorily participate in proficiency testing programAbility to compile, analyze, evaluate, and prepare laboratory reportsRequired QualificationsA Ph.D. or Master's degree from an accredited university in microbiology, molecular biology, or related course work in the biological sciences with at least two years of laboratory bench experience utilizing PCR, aseptic techniques and biological assays and at least two years of experience serving as a Senior Scientist or Team Leader of a laboratory team/project.Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree with at least five years of laboratory bench experience, including at least two years or experience as a Team Leader/Senior Scientist.Some laboratory sites require personnel working in the facility to have Select Agent Registration, and/or American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification.U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident Card (USCIS I-551).Ability to pass background investigation to meet (and maintain) eligibility for access to sensitive information.Desired QualificationsExperience working in a Biosafety Level (BSL) 2 and/or 3 Laboratory.BENEFITSBattelle's competitive benefits program includes comprehensive medical and dental care, matching 401K, paid time off, flexible spending accounts, disability coverage, and other benefits that help provide financial protection for you and your family.
