GDIT is seeking a Research Scientist II to support WRAIR's Entomology Branch. The contractor will Serve as a Senior Research Scientist in the Entomology, Vector Control Branch. Work involves basic and applied research in support of the U.S. Military Entomology Research Program. The contractor will be expected to exhibit and maintain effective technical knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas: vector biology and ecology, vector control, vector-borne disease epidemiology, vector surveillance. serve as Principal Investigator or actively participating co-investigator on at least one active protocol. Serve as a technical advisor to the Department Chief, Vector Control & Surveillance. The contractor shall successfully submit proposals and Grants to compete for external funding opportunities (MIDRP, DHP, GIES), developing and validating research protocols, conducting research in both the laboratory and field setting, supporting mission relevant studies through collaborative projects with both intramural and extramural investigators collectively titled Proposal Status Reports.  

 

Additional tasks include:

 

  1. Serve as Principal Investigator or actively participating co-investigator on at least one active protocol.
  2. Serve as a technical advisor to the Department Chief, Vector Control & Surveillance.
  3. Successfully submit proposals and Grants to compete for external funding opportunities (MIDRP, DHP, GIES), developing and validating research protocols, conducting research in both the laboratory and field setting, supporting mission relevant studies through collaborative projects with both intramural and extramural investigators collectively titled Proposal Status Reports. 
  4. Produce at least one peer reviewed scientific publications/year as first or senior author. Provide all job-related progress reports/technical reports as requested, participate in branch seminars with presentation of results of current studies at least twice/year.
  5. Prepare and present research results at national and international meetings, participate in scientific interactions and/or collaborations with other members of the Branch and the 6 other labs within the U.S. Military Entomology Research Program, support mission relevant studies through collaborative projects with both intramural and extramural investigators. Initiates and maintains collaborative relationships with external partners including the CDC and USDA and various international and non-governmental organizations to collaborate on RDT&E efforts to understand and reduce the risk of vector-borne diseases.
  6. Assist the Branch in the planning, organization, and execution of research to improve vector surveillance and control capabilities for the military, Initiate research plan, write research grant proposals, and under the Department Chief’s review and approval, submit for funding support; conduct research studies under supervision of the Department Chief.
  7. Act on behalf of the Department Chief, manage and carry on the departmental missions and operations during his/her absence.
  8. Train/certify and keep current of training and certification required for the position, duties and responsibilities, maintain a safe workplace ensuring that he/she is aware of and observes appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations.
  9. Attend required safety training relative to his/her position and report any infractions of safety procedures to the Department Chief and facility Safety Officer.
 

 

Education PhD in entomology, microbiology, parasitology or related fields with a working knowledge of managing a laboratory/department to include procuring funding, allocating resources, managing multiple projects, planning /executing experiments and managing personnel

Qualifications 8-10 years of related experience in scientific research, analysis and/or engineering.

 Familiarity with cultivation and production of human, simian, and rodent parasites or experience in malaria research programs.
