Executive Director, Institute of International Economic Law - Georgetown Law

Georgetown Law's Institute of International Economic Law (IIEL) is the focal point for the study of international economic law at Georgetown University. IIEL's faculty includes scholars and practitioners at the fore front of all areas of International economic law including trade, investment and financial regulation, tax, business and monetary law. Engaged with students, legal practitioners, the DC and global policy communities, IIEL administers a robust calendar of executive education and academic programs on campus and around the world.

The Executive Director has overall responsibility for all aspects of the daily activities of the Institute of International Economic Law, and, when necessary, acts on behalf of the Faculty Director to advance IIEL fund raising and other key initiatives.  S/he supports reputation enhancement and fundraising, directs IIEL's Oral History Project, partners with the Faculty Director on research and scholarship activities, and partners with the Director of Programs & External Affairs on the IIEL's robust programming agenda. The Executive Director coordinates closely with all IIEL team members, and periodically supervises student research assistants.  Reporting to IIEL's Faculty Director, the Executive Director has duties that include but are not limited to:

Significant relationship, reputation building and fundraising responsibility with other organizations, think tanks and institutes in the United States and abroad, including:

  • Plans and executes a robust fundraising campaign, in concert with the Law Center's Development team and IIEL colleagues, designed to position the Institute for the next stage in its development.
  • Administers IIEL's financial planning and management work, preparation and oversight of the annual budget, preparation of grant proposals, and other fundraising efforts.
  • Represents the IIEL via speaking engagements in professional and scholarly fora.

Research, Scholarship & Programming Endeavors, with the goal of making IIEL the preeminent research and convening institute in the area of international economic law, including:

  • Serves as a thought-leader in the area of international economic law, penning occasional timely piece s for IIEL publication.
  • Co-teaches IIEL's Spring Colloquium in concert with the Faculty Director.
  • Partners with the Director, Programs & External Affairs in building IIEL's programming agenda, including its growing Executive Education menu.

Direction of Georgetown Law's Oral History of the World Trading System Project, including:

  • Serves as Project Director and Principal Investigator, receiving all requisite training through the University's Institutional Review Board and managing all necessary annual re-certifications required to keep the Project in good standing.
  • Revives and reorganizes the Project and all Project-related materials.
  • Ensures annual project renewals are timely and accurately completed.
  • Advances the goal of making project materials available to the public for scholarly purposes (as may be acceptable to participants).

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate
  • A significant, professional background in international economic law and policy, spanning decades of achievement
  • Recognized expertise in international economic law, with a Rolodex of global connections and relationships
  • Experience developing budgets and successful fundraising initiatives
  • Significant executive experience leading high-functioning teams at the highest levels of government, in the private sector or nonprofit settings
  • Willingness to '"pull sleeves up" to work with IIEL professional staff on executing events
  • Experience in a higher education setting and with mentoring students, ideally as an adjunct law professor
  • Effective team player with strong problem-solving, leadership, and motivational skills
  • Comfortable in interactions with internal colleagues and external constituents, donors, program participants and VIPs
  • Excellent communication skills (interpersonal, written and verbal)
