Job Title: WATER/SEWER/STREETS EQUIPMENT OPERATOR Closing Date/Time: Thu. 06/29/17 11:59 PM Eastern Time Salary: $38,625.60 - $59,030.40 Annually
Job Type: Full-Time Location: Water/Sewer/Streets Division - 4200 S. 28th Street, Arlington, Virginia       This Water/Sewer/Streets (WSS) Equipment Operator is responsible for driving and operating heavy construction equipment to support the construction and maintenance of the County's water, sewer, and streets infrastructure.

Specific duties include:
  • Operating a backhoe, forklift, skid steer's and/or crane truck to excavate trenches and holes, assisting in moving materials and equipment, and grading surfaces for construction;
  • Operating a uni-loader and related equipment to assist in the construction and/or maintenance of seasonal public works' projects;
  • Loading various size trucks (medium (6 axle) & tandem (10 axle), and driving and operating other equipment such as asphalt rollers (walk behind and riding), asphalt/concrete saw's (handheld and walk behind); front-end loader; and
  • Performing routine preventive maintenance on equipment.
This employee is required to work on snow removal operations and will be exposed to all types of weather conditions, drafts, noise, dust, grease, and dirt. The employee performs related duties as assigned and receives supervision from a Senior Technician and/or Trades Manager Leader.
 Selection Criteria: Minimum Qualifications: A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to drive and operate equipment and vehicles such as medium and tandem dump trucks, crane trucks, front-end loaders, or asphalt rollers, asphalt/concrete saw's, skid steer's and forklifts.  A class "A" or "B" commercial driver's license  with airbrakes endorsement is required.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • At least two years of experience operating a backhoe and/or similar equipment;
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance on equipment; and/or
  • Experience in field construction (reading/interpreting plans, cut sheets, etc.).

 Special Requirements: 1) Applicant must possess a class "B" or "A" commercial driver's license with airbrakes endorsement.
2) The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record.
3) Prior to the time of appointment, the successful applicant must pass a pre-employment drug screening. Once hired, the employee will be subject to drug screening at such times during employment as required by federal, state, and local standards and regulations.
4) Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record and passing a pre-employment drug screening and alcohol breath test as required by applicable standards.
5) Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
 Additional Information: Work Hours: 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Must be available for call-back in emergency situations such as snow removal.

This position is a part of a multi-grade series and may be filled at either level I or II based on a skills, performance and experience assessment.
