Metabolomics Laboratory Technician (Part-Time)

The George Mason University Chemistry and Biochemistry Department, on the Science and Technology Campus, is currently seeking a laboratory technician to join our research team. Responsibilities: Working with Dr. Robin Couch, the successful candidate will be responsible for performing tasks and experiments in support of ongoing metabolomics-related scientific investigations. The incumbent will work an average of six hours per day, five days per week (not to exceed 1450 hours per year), with an anticipated starting salary of $20 per hour.

Required Qualifications: * Degree in analytical chemistry, or a highly related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience; * Demonstrated experience with the use of LC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and GC-MS; * High level of initiative and ability to work productively with limited supervision; * Strong computer aptitude, including experience with word processing, spreadsheet software, and statistical analysis software (e.g., use of R to prepare PCA plots etc.); * Willingness to work at BSL2 and/or BSL3; * Excellent pipetting and analytical skills; * Excellent attention to detail in laboratory tasks as well as administrative tasks; * Excellent punctuality, organization, and time management skills; * Ability to work under pressure and maintain a professional demeanor; * Ability to read and comprehend relevant scientific literature; * Flexibility to handle a variety of tasks and shift priorities simultaneously; * Strong interpersonal skills; * Ability to effectively interact with all levels of staff and external contacts; * Ability to work as an effective team member; * A cooperative and service-oriented attitude; * Ability to use sound judgment to effectively solve problems within the scope of the position; and * Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: * Demonstrated hands-on laboratory experience with headspace solid phase microextraction (hSPME); * Demonstrated hands-on laboratory experience in an independent research project; * Demonstrated experience with microbiological and aseptic techniques using solid and liquid media; and * Demonstrated hands-on experience with metabolomics data analysis software.
