The Transportation Research Board (TRB) is one of seven major programs of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The mission of the Transportation Research Board is to increase the benefits that transportation contributes to society by providing leadership in transportation innovation and progress through research and information exchange, conducted within a setting that is objective, interdisciplinary, and multimodal. The Board’s varied committees, task forces, and panels annually engage about 7,000 engineers, scientists, and other transportation researchers and practitioners from the public and private sectors and academia, all of whom contribute their expertise in the public interest. The program is supported by state transportation departments, federal agencies including the component administrations of the U.S. Department of Transportation, and other organizations and individuals interested in the development of transportation.
The Cooperative Research Programs Division of the TRB administers a number of major research programs sponsored by other organizations. Under all of these programs, TRB organizes panels of experts to provide guidance on technical aspects of the research and to translate the problems into project statements with well-defined objectives. Research proposals are then solicited from private and public research organizations with capability and experience in the problem areas to be studied. The technical panels review the proposals, recommend contract awards, monitor research in progress, provide technical guidance, and determine the acceptability of the final reports. More than 3,000 experienced practitioners and research specialists currently serve on Cooperative Research Program panels.
Requires demonstrated experience in editing engineering reports, syntheses, and brochures; analyzing and researching photos/illustrations; and proofreading typeset pages and digital printer proofs. Requires ability to advise authors on report structure and presentation and to coordinate production of diverse publications through the complete editorial, typesetting, and printing stages. The position also requires demonstrated knowledge of web-based publishing, experience in mentoring/advising junior/freelance staff, and the ability to handle multiple projects under deadline pressure. Use of technology for manuscript tracking, electronic editing, and file sharing is desired. Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite required; practical knowledge of Adobe Acrobat Creative Suite a plus.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
1. Evaluate author text and art files and edit book-length technical reports and syntheses and other program material for clarity, conciseness, and conformity to TRB standards and the Chicago Manual of Style.
2. Query expert authors and TRB program officers on content and report structure and incorporate revisions into final documents.
3. Advise technical program staff on print, digital, and web publication options and support dissemination activities as needed.
4. May advise freelance editors and proofreaders and oversee production of jobs edited offsite.
5. Proofread typeset page proofs.
6. Work with typesetters, graphic artists, and printers on all aspects of print production.
7. Review and approve color covers, digital printer proofs, and web pages.
8. Demonstrate commitment to teamwork and meeting deadlines.
9. Check PDF versions of publications for accurate internal bookmarking and navigation links.
10. Perform a variety of related administrative tasks, such as determining vendor production schedules, handling copyright permission requests, assigning Library of Congress/ISBN serial numbers; editing program announcements and meeting notes, updating production management software entries for related projects, preparing distribution instructions, and working with colleagues to compile department annual reports.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
5–7 years of comprehensive experience in editing, project management, and digital publishing activities desired.
Proven ability to exercise independent judgment regarding level of edit per project required. Ability to work successfully in a fast-paced, team environment that has competing demands from state and federal sponsors and TRB staff. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required to effectively interact with all levels of employees and multiple contract vendors. Superior organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
