Academic Advisor, Health and Tourism - School of Recreation
The George Mason University School of Recreation, Health and Tourism (RHT) within the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) invites applications for an Academic Advisor position. Responsibilities: This position plays an important role in helping undergraduate students choose an appropriate course of studies and then pursue that academic program in an efficient manner. This position is a full-time, benefitted staff member who meets regularly with students, helping them to meet their educational and career goals. The incumbent will work closely with the RHT Division Directors and Academic Program Coordinators, as well as with other student service professionals in the CEHD Student and Academic Affairs Office. Specific responsibilities of this position include: * Assisting students with academic course planning and scheduling; * Participating in orientation and admissions events; * Helping students initiate academic actions (e.g., course substitutions, transfer credit inquiries and evaluations, course waivers); * Maintaining an advising record for each student; and * Identifying and assisting academically at-risk students.
The Academic Advisor will be primarily located on the Science and Technology campus (located in Prince William County), but will also meet with students on the Fairfax campus. Occasional evening and weekend activities are required in conjunction with Mason Admission Office event and orientation schedules.
Required Qualifications: * Bachelorâ€™s degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Preferred Qualifications: * Masterâ€™s degree in higher education administration, counseling, or a similar field (or an equivalent combination of education and experience in lieu of the degree); * Advising or counseling experience in an educational setting, a proactive work orientation, and a strong commitment to facilitating the work of students and their instructional faculty; and * Preferred consideration will further be given to candidates with a masterâ€™s degree and direct experience advising students at the higher education level.
