Traffic Controller II, Traffic & Parking - Office of Transportation Management

The Traffic Controller serves as Lead to other Traffic Controllers and provides management's direction to other staff. S/he works collaboratively with the Bus Driver IIIs, and monitors day to day parking operations closes SW garage when full and notifies management; and directs traffic for special events and performs related tasks as assigned. Reporting to the Director of Transportation Management, the Traffic Controller II has duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Enforces University parking and traffic regulations to provide for public safety and to ensure availability of parking spaces for registered parkers, authorized visitors and University vehicles to the Southwest Parking Garage; monitors the garage to determine when it is at full capacity; advises management and directs overflow to another location; makes sure that the attendant has appropriate change at all times; and ensures that buses are able to pick up at designated stops.
  • Operates and maintains tow trucks, pickup trucks and similar equipment, as well as hand tools for purpose of patrolling University grounds and for booting and moving illegally parked vehicles; fixes broken gate arms, and performs general maintenance of gate equipment and minor register adjustments; and contacts vendor when assistance is needed for gate arm repairs.
  • Monitors the garage and parking attendants to ensure everything is running smoothly and the attendants have what they need; and makes sure gates are working properly and that attendants have enough register tape, passes, and change.
  • Provides assistance and information to University community members and visitors to the University to encourage a positive University image; explains University parking and transportation regulations and services; and meets with University officials and contractors to discuss parking needs.
  • Provides motorist assistance such as jump starts, flat repairs and towing to a legal space; performs other duties as assigned that benefit the department overall; fills in for the Senior Operations Manager as needed; and trains new personnel on equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or certified equivalency
  • Experience in customer service - preference for experience in operating a tow truck preferred and/or any equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Valid DC, VA or MD driver's license and, if hired, meets and maintains criteria to become and remain a University Authorized driver
  • Good verbal communication skills
