Job Title: HVAC MECHANIC II Closing Date/Time: Continuous Salary: $64,147.20 - $98,009.60 Annually
Job Type: Full-Time Location: 1400 N. Uhle Street, Arlington *METRO-accessible*, Virginia       Are you a senior mechanic with an HVAC Mechanic Journeyman's license? The Facilities Maintenance Bureau within the Department of Environmental Services is seeking an HVAC Mechanic II to repair and maintain heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, equipment and components at multiple sites throughout the County. This position will also monitor Building Automated Systems (BAS) to identify/diagnose any issues to ensure the continuous operation of HVAC systems throughout the County. The HVAC Mechanic II will assist with developing preventive and corrective HVAC maintenance procedures, performing preventive and corrective maintenance duties and overseeing contracted HVAC work.

Specific duties include:
  • Monitoring work in progress and providing technical guidance and direction to other technicians;
  • Diagnosing equipment problems;
  • Repairing and maintaining commercial air handling units, chillers, cabinet unit heaters, VAV, VRF, heat recovery units, low and high pressure boilers and similar equipment;
  • Ordering repair parts;
  • Testing and replacing digital control panels, thermostats, sensors, transmitters, controllers, relays, automatic valves and dampers;
  • Using computer controlled BAS systems to evaluate, diagnose problems, and make adjustments to temperatures and humidity in buildings throughout the County to ensure that proper comfort levels are maintained at all times and that the equipment is operating; and
  • Informing clients of HVAC issues and repairs schedules.

 Selection Criteria: Minimum Education: High School diploma or equivalent and a two-year technical degree in air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, and ventilating;

Minimum Experience:
  1. Significant experience repairing and maintaining HVAC equipment in commercial buildings;
  2. One year using and operating automated building systems by Siemens and Trane, or similar systems;
  3. Servicing boilers; and
  4. Possession of Universal CFC Recovery License and HVAC Mechanic Journeyman's license from Virginia, Maryland or the District of Columbia.

Substitution: Additional years of HVAC equipment mechanic experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience with one or more of the following:
  • Repair and maintenance of large commercial HVAC equipment at multiple sites;
  • Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF);
  • Variable Air Volume (VAV) Boxes; and
  • Digital control systems equipment.

 Special Requirements: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, and maintain, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

An offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable pre-hire background check conducted by the Sheriff's Department on all final candidates. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
 Additional Information: Work Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Shift may change depending on departmental need. Employee must be available for call-back and be willing to work after normal duty hours in emergency situations, provide coverage for building engineers during staff shortage and work the afternoon shift for one week every 10 weeks.

The employee will operate a County vehicle to perform assigned duties away from primary worksite. Supervision is received from the Maintenance Supervisor.

The work environment includes exposure to noise, odors, dust, grease, and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment.
