Position Description

The Associate Director of Infrastructure Services is responsible for assisting the Director to provide leadership support, vision and planning for the research engineering activities of enterprise networking, data storage, and computing for the University of Maryland. This position provides oversight for the planning, design and implementation of networking, data storage, and computing services for the University, including activities associated with its participation in regional and national groups including research technology. Responsibilities include planning, design, engineering and project support for high-performance computing (HPC); petabyte-scale data storage, with uses ranging from collaborative software development environments to multi-terabyte scientific datasets; High speed networking for campus; leveraging cutting-edge cloud computing resources; establishing strategic relationships with vendors; collaborating with peers across the University System of Maryland (USM) and the State of Maryland; in conjunction with the Director, assessing and understanding campus research needs and collaborating with campus units on technology direction; instituting appropriate controls, processes and best practices that ensure compliance with Federal, State, and USM audit requirements.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

Ten years of progressive experience in Information Technology and hands-on systems engineering experience in an enterprise data networking infrastructure or application environment.

At least five years working in a university environment, supporting administrative and research infrastructure.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Proven track record of developing and executing technology strategies and programs, and a passion for new and emerging technologies and their applicability to the University community.

Technical competency in the areas of research computing, networking, and enterprise-scale storage (block and object-based).

Experience building, administering, and using high-performance computing systems.

Skill in managing and influencing vendors and consultants.

Skill in managing projects (i.e., time estimates, resources allocations, project status updates, managing critical path and milestone deadlines).

A strong understanding of IP networking, and highly experienced in data services engineering.

Ability to ramp up and add value quickly.

Ability to lead large enterprise-wide projects.

Ability to manage budgets.

Ability to work independently and in a matrix team environment.

Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with faculty, researchers, technical staff, administrators, and constituents outside the University.

Ability to represent the University in various forums at the local, state, regional and national levels.

Ability to communicate effectively orally, and in writing.
 

Preferences

Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.

Experience working in a large research university environment.

Demonstrated successful experience leading and managing large-scale infrastructure projects and developing a technical vision for the oversight of a major technology/service unit.

Ability to lead large-scale/enterprise-wide projects and display a high degree of proficiency in project management techniques, including time estimates, resource allocations, project status updates, managing critical path and milestone deadlines.

Very strong planning, organizing, evaluating, delegating, multi-tasking and time management skills.

Ability to work independently and in matrix team environments, and collaborate easily with direct reports, peers and senior leadership.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, and distill technical material down into a message that can be understood across the University.
