THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF.

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Must satisfactorily pass all ASE required tests and required internal certification/promotion tests. Some knowledge of and have performed satisfactorily the duties of a Garage Mechanic or related field for a period of not less than two (2) years. Must have one (1) current ASE certification in one field (Transit Bus, Automotive, Medium/Heavy Truck or School Bus) or for grand fathered employees pass the required type and number of internal tests.
WMATA reserves its sole and exclusive right to substitute any of the above test/certification requirements including but not limited to changes to other providers.
WMATA In-House Certification Training will continue to be provided and conducted on-duty.
Valid Commercial Drivers Learner's Permit from jurisdiction of residence is required prior to appointment with proper Passenger, Air Brakes, and Tow Truck operations endorsements. Must acquire a valid Commercial Driver's License with Passenger, Air Brakes and Tow Truck operations endorsements by the completion of training.

Ability to satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this position. Must be able to perform the essential functions of this job either with or without reasonable accommodation(s).
This is highly skilled technical vehicle maintenance work involving troubleshooting, disassembly, repair, assembly and/or installation of automotive/diesel engines, transmissions, large and small electric/pneumatic/hydraulic components, chassis and vehicle body repairs for the bus and automotive fleet. Employee has considerable latitude for independent judgment and action within established guidelines. Employee is expected to complete assignments without close supervision and contribute to the solution of new problems. Employee reports to the Lead Mechanic or assigned Shift Supervisor. Work is reviewed through spot checks and occasional checking of results by a Lead Mechanic or Supervisor.
Employee performs basic to complex maintenance work on WMATA vehicles.
Employee gains familiarity with and develops skills in the operation, maintenance and repair of WMATA vehicles and equipment.
Employee receives instruction and close supervision on new assignments, while regular assignments are performed independently.
Work is reviewed and verified to check progress and conformance to established policies and requirements by a Lead Mechanic or Garage Shift Supervisor.
Performs tasks in any of several areas of the bus maintenance activity.
Performs major repairs on all designated component parts of vehicles and analyzes and corrects those components having special or new problems.
Conducts technical diagnostics, performs major engine work, etc.
Performs all tasks in conformance with safety and maintenance practices and procedures.
Uses various types of test equipment and related specialized tools associated with job assignment.
Completes required documentation and reports for the operation and maintenance of WMATA vehicles and related components by using the proper forms and tags.
Attends on-the-job and formal training classes: Assists higher classified co-workers in their assignments or provides job specific training to lower classified co-workers.
Performs flame cutting and basic welding operations, brazing and soldering as required.
Responds to and provides assistance in emergencies such as securing or safeguarding WMATA vehicles and equipment, fire/life/safety, snow emergencies, etc.
Operates Authority vehicles as required. Works various hours, locations, and days as required. Maintains cleanliness of work area.
Performs tasks which may include heavy physical labor.
