Principal Engineer, Network
ResponsibilitiesEvaluates, designs, documents, installs, implements, tests, and performs problem isolation and resolution. Monitors, tunes and sets standards. Maintains a complex range of computer network components and systems. Plans and coordinates major information technology initiatives. Researches, evaluates and recommends new computer network equipment and technologies. Utilizes monitoring, performance analysis, network management software and hardware equipment to troubleshoot and isolate problems, gauge network performance and trace data and protocol activity. Devises solutions to complex operational problems within the capacity and operational limitations of installed equipment. Develops and executes contingency plans for network software and hardware failures including isolated and major outages. Provides internal consulting, technical guidance, information and support to application developers, computer operations, workstation support, company management and departmental clients. Assists in internal training programs. Meets regularly with other network team leads to plan and coordinate efforts, resolve cross-team issues and communicate changes. Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of Cisco IOS, Nexus-OS (NX-OS), VPNs, VLANs, ASAs, and ACLsKnowledge of NSA approved HAIPE encryption devices (KG 250s, KG 175Ds, etc)SolarWinds network monitoring and Voice over IP (VoIP, CUCM) experience preferredHas full technical knowledge of all phases of network operationsExcellent communication skills; shows tact, effective listening skills and follow throughMay be required to provide clear written documentation on network proceduresMust be able to effectively interact with staff from other sections on complex client/server problemsMust be able to evaluate network performance and interact with users to solve the most complex problemsCan offer effective solutions that are also practical within system and budget constraintsDetail oriented and organized; able to understand network evaluation criteria and be exact in assessmentsReviews the work of others and is able to detect errors or needed modificationsPrior government or military employment experience preferredVideo Teleconferencing experience (Cisco VCS, MCU) preferred
- Analyzes voice, video, radio-frequency, and/or data communications networks, including planning, designing, evaluating, selecting, and upgrading operating systems and protocol suites and configuring communication media with concentrators, bridges, and other devices. Plans network layouts and configures systems to user environments. Analyzes network topologies and traffic and capacity requirements. Supports the acquisition of hardware and software as well as subcontractor services as needed. May provide technical support and troubleshooting to users. May perform network administration duties. Provides guidance and work leadership to less-experienced network personnel and may have supervisory responsibilities. May serve as technical team or task leader. Maintains current knowledge of relevant technology as assigned. Participates in special projects as required.
