RESPONSIBILITIES Position located at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Remote Sensing Laboratory - Andrews (RSLA) on Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. The qualified candidate will serve as an emergency response team member to deploy in support of the DOE in the case of radiological/nuclear emergencies; as such they will have to stand duty to be ready to deploy worldwide within a few hours of notification. Will be expected to maintain and operate radiation detection equipment and collect radiological data in field operations. Assist with the research and development of new concepts related to the improvement of detection systems and related technologies. Prepares or contributes to strategies, reports and technical proposals. Will participate in developing programs and possible designs. Support other personnel with specific tasks. Perform calibration, characterization, and system-level repairs of radiation detection systems. Assist with fabricating electronic and mechanical assemblies. Construct systems and prototypes as per schematics and drawings. Maintain up to date knowledge of engineering applications, techniques, detector and acquisition electronics, digital imagery, and radio and satellite communications. Develop solutions to routine technical problems and collaborate with peers. Perform other related work as assigned by supervisor. Accept individual responsibility and accountability for environment, safety, health, and quality processes within personal control, personal safety, and the safety of co-workers. Comply with established regulations and procedures for environment, safety, health, and quality and perform duties in a way that will not cause personal danger, endanger other individuals, or violate environment, safety, health, and quality regulations. Participate in and embrace NSTec environment, safety, health, and quality initiatives.QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a calculus based Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) field, plus at least two years' relevant experience. Experience in one or more of the following is desirable: analog and digital electronics, communication systems, or radiation detection systems. Candidate must have good written and oral communication skills. Must be willing and able to work non-standard hours in various environments, including at sea and aboard aircraft, stand on-call duty, and deploy worldwide on short notice. Ability to serve as crew member on board rotary or twin engine fixed wing aircraft operating equipment while in flight is essential. Must be willing and able to travel worldwide, sometimes under severe conditions, as a member of National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) emergency response teams. Frequent domestic and occasional international travel will be required (20-40%). Must be capable of performing moderate lifting and meet requirements for worldwide deployment. Applicant must possess a valid driver's license. Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, "Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites," will be conducted.
