The Reference Librarian & Instructional Services Coordinator, assigned to the Edward Bennett Williams Law Library, is a member of a diverse reference and research services staff of 14 librarians from different professional backgrounds and with wide ranging interests and areas of expertise. Under the direct supervision of the Head of Reference, the Librarian is an essential member of the Reference team, which provides extensive legal reference services in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; and assists with managing law library instructional programs and reference services as needed. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Performs promotion, outreach, and coordination of instructional services with Law Center faculty and staff, including management of fall orientation activities for over 600 students.
- Provides oversight for legal research instruction (e.g., specialized courses, clinics), and participates in the first-year legal research and writing program and journal liaison program for one of the largest law schools in the nation.
- Participates in the reference desk rotation (including evenings and weekends); conducts individual research consultations, and writes research guides.
- Serves as the primary contact for designated faculty members in a liaison program to meet research and scholarship needs, and works with the Library Research Services team to coordinate in-depth faculty research projects.
- Participates in the library's collection development in assigned subject areas.
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school or non-U.S. J.D. equivalent; and Master's degree from an ALA-accredited school of library and/or information studies or non-U.S. Master's degree equivalent
- 5+ years of reference and/or teaching experience in an academic law library - related professional experience may be considered as a substitute (Candidates with less than 5 years of experience, but a combination of compelling work history and job skills, will be considered)
- Experience with legal research materials, including online legal databases
- Knowledge of legal materials
- Excellent communication and instructional skills
Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. The position receives annual funding and leave for professional development and training. As well, the Law Library also supports administrative leave for scholarly research and writing, and full-time librarians may apply for up to 2 weeks of administrative leave after 1 year of continuous service. The Reference Librarian & Instructional Services Coordinator is encouraged to participate as a member of Law Library and Law Center committees to grow and contribute to community life.
