JOB SUMMARY:

The Defense Health Agency, National Capital Region Medical Directorate (NCR-MD) is the future of Military Medicine- a partnership in World Class Medical Healthcare. The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Dilorenzo Clinic and the Joint Pathology Center, provide world class medical services to the nation's service members and their families.

About the Position: This position is located within the Directorate of Nursing, Maternal Child Nursing, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Receives patients and visitors as the initial point of contact, in person or telephonically. Answers the telephone, records and relays messages or redirects calls, as necessary. Maintains patient records, electronic or paper, according to regulations. Files data in appropriate patient record. On discharge or transfer of patient, verifies and assures that records of patient treatment are complete. Responsible for the clerical duties inherent in the admission and discharge of patients. Performs other miscellaneous support duties, such as transporting specimens to various laboratories or clinical areas; making up admission packets; copying forms, filing, sorting mail, faxing, and other such duties as may be assigned.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.     Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as performing clerical duties and functions associated with the treatment of patients such as: assembling patient charts, recording physician's orders; retrieving, entering and manipulating information and data from various automated systems, such as the Composite Health Care System, Electronic Health Record; receiving patients and visitors in person and by telephone; documenting patient information in medical records and/or charts; completing various forms for patient orders. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
    Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below.

    Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-05: Successful completion of four years of education above the high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to this position such as medical office support processes. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

    Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-05: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education above the high school level in excess of 60 semester hours (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

    Qualified Typist required: This position requires the incumbent be a qualified typist, being able to type 40 words per minute.

    • The incumbent will work a 40-hour, 5-day week schedule, and may be required to work rotating shifts.
    • CPR certification.
    • May be selected for random drug screening.
