International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
GENERAL SUMMARY: Practicing under the International Lactation Consultant Association Standards of Practice, the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is responsible for providing lactation education and management education/instruction, rental of lactation equipment, and telephone triage and counseling to Medstar Washington Hospital Center patients and members of the community as out-patients. The IBCLC utilizes principles of adult learning in planning, teaching, instruction, and evaluation. EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in nursing required. PRIOR EXPERIENCE: Approximately 2-4 years of lactation experience as a Certified Lactation Counselor including patient education and bedside consultation. Experience in interacting and communicating in public forums is also required. ON-THE-JOB EXPERIENCE: Approximately six to twelve months to gain familiarity with the Hospital environment, department routines and procedures, and the full range of job duties. CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION/LICENSURE: Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the District of Columbia required. Current certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and current certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
