System Administrator's manage the functionality and efficiency of a group of computers running on one or more operating systems.


 Manages the functionality and efficiency of a group of computers running on one or more operating systems.

 Maintains the integrity and security of servers and systems.

 Sets up administrator and service accounts to include troubleshooting on a multitude of users and system predicaments as well as be able to redirect  incidents out of his/her expertise to the responsible party.

 Maintains system documentation

 Interacts with users and evaluates vendor products.

 Makes recommendations to purchase hardware and software, coordinates installation and provides backup recovery. Serves as the primary observer and maintainer of the ALIS operating unit.

 Develops and monitors policies and standards for allocation related to the use of computing resources.

 May program in an administrative language.

 Develops and implements testing strategies and document results.

 Provides advice and training to end-users.

 Provides guidance and work leadership to less-experienced staff members.

 Maintains current knowledge of relevant technologies as assigned.

 Responsible for all Vulnerability Alert review activities and the P3 compliance actions occurring within ALIS.

 Works in conjunction with ALIS Database Administrator's to manage disaster recovery, backup/archiving of data and data integrity. 

 Assist in managing COTS/GOTS for ALIS.

 Manage integrated Problem reporting, Version Control and Baseline tool across the ALIS program


Education Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical certifications or training, or work experience.


CompTIA Security + CE required.


Previous experience, current knowledge, and developed skills in system administration, especially in are highly desired and preferred.  Certifications are not required for a System Administrator; however, certifications provide credibility to a System Administrator’s technical knowledge and skills.  The following is a list of desired certifications for a System Administrator to have acquired:

    Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCITP)it is important to note that Microsoft recognizes a combination of A+ and Network+ certifications or a combination of A+ and Server+ certifications are alternative courses that can be counted toward the MCITP certification.Certified SOLARIS system administrationSUNRay Server management training (used only at the ALOU)
Qualifications 2-5 years of directly related experience in systems administration and analysis.


System administrators should be experienced in the following technical skills:

- Network-attached Storage (NAS)/Storage Area Network (SAN) Technology

- Virtualization Technology

- WAN/LAN Infrastructure & Technology

- Web Application Server Technology

- Messaging and Messaging Queuing Technology

- Virtualization Technology

- Application Troubleshooting

          - Customer Relationship Management (CRM): Siebel

          - Industrial and Financial Systems (IFS)

          - DM

          - Scripting (shell, bash) 


Prior to hire, system administrators must have demonstrated professional experience in at least ten of the sixteen tools listed in major items  below:

- Symantec Recovery

- NetIQ AppManager

- NetIQ Security Manager

- Active Directory and Remote Access Dial-In User Server (RADIUS)

- HP Insight Manager

- VMware Virtual Center

- Network Instruments Link Analyst

- MS Windows 2003 Server Operating Systems

- MS Active Directory

- VMWare

- WebMethod Integration Server

- Business Enterprise Architecture (BEA) WebLogic Application Server

- Siebel

- Microsoft Data Center


- SUNRay Server


Access to ALIS operating units is restricted to the appropriately cleared personnel.  All ALIS DBAs are required to possess a current Secret/Special Access Required (S/SAR) clearance prior to onboarding, and be capable of attaining the appropriate program Special Access Program (SAP) for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Program.


SECRET security clearance required with a PR completed in the last 5 years.
