The George Mason University Office of Student Involvement is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual to apply for the position of Assistant Director of Student Involvement for Programming. Responsibilities: The Assistant Director for Student Involvement is an administrative faculty position and is a part of the professional staff team of Student Involvement, within the Division of University Life. Student Involvement (SI) is an exciting department comprised of major events, Patriot Activities Council, Student Government, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Registered Student Organizations, TEDxGeorge Mason U, the Well-Being Team, and TEAM SI. The Assistant Director serves as a co-advisor for the 12-member Patriot Activities Council (PAC), our campus program board. Together, the advisors will provide oversight, support, advisement and learning opportunities to the Executive Board members, PAC Street Team and the General Body members. In addition, this position works to ignite the spirit of campus through educational and social programs focused on a sense of belonging, well-being, career readiness, global and multicultural competency, and civic learning and community engagement. Duties include:
Advising Students: * Co-advise the Patriot Activities Council with the Associate Director of Programming; * Provide support, training, and guidance for student-led programming initiatives, such as student Homecoming Week, HIV/AIDS Awareness Fashion Show, Mason Mayhem, daytime programs, off-campus trips, and part of the annual Mason Day; * Attend weekly PAC meetings and events, and meet regularly with executive board members; and * Develop and facilitate leadership training and retreats for members of the Patriot Activities Council, including but not limited to the following topics: leadership, event planning and event management, marketing and promotion, peer advising, facilitation, contract negotiation, risk management, etc.
Programming Responsibilities: * Coordinate Winter Welcome Week; * Work in partnership with the Associate Director to plan and implement the SI at the CFA program; * Serve on the Welcome2Mason committee, planning programming for the first few weeks of school; * Manage the SI Films program within the Patriot Activities Council; * Oversee/assist with the physical setup, decoration and execution of events; * Work with PAC executive board members to develop programs that intentionally engage off-campus students; and * Intentionally seek out collaborative opportunities with other university departments.
Administrative Responsibilities: * Manage individual event budgets; * Work within the purchasing and accounts payable processes set forth by the commonwealth of Virginia; * Develop and implement an assessment plan for all PAC programs and leadership experiences; * Serve on university wide committees such as Welcome2Mason, Homecoming, and others; * Participate as an active member of the University Life/Student Involvement professional staff, attending departmental meetings, collaborating with other staff members, and assisting in-office and department-wide initiatives and programs; * Perform other related duties as assigned; and * This position requires regular evening and weekend hours.
Required Qualifications: * Masters degree in student affairs, higher education, college student development, or related fields of study; * Demonstrated professional experience in student activities, residence life, or a related area within student affairs (minimum of one year is preferred); * Positive attitude and genuine excitement for working with students and student programs; * Demonstrated experience in direct advisement and leadership development of students and student organizations; * Demonstrated experience with event management, event assessment, risk management, and budgeting; * Demonstrated ability to provide follow through and meet deadlines; * Attention to detail a must; * Demonstrated experience managing conflict; * Strong communication skills; and * Ability to work with a team to accomplish group goals.
Preferred Qualifications: * Demonstrated experience successfully advising a student programming team; * Large-scale event management experience; * Strong organizational skills; * Highly creative thinker; * Able to connect well with students; and * Demonstrated commitment to diversity and the practice of open and effective communication with students, faculty and staff to build and maintain collaborative relationships.
