The Principal Engineer, Application Virtualization is a subject matter expert responsible for the virtualization and sequencing of all application packages within the Enterprise.
Specific responsibilities include:

Serve as an expert in IT systems architecture and perform application packaging of customer approved software for use in VDI environments. Service will include the coordination between customer, Software Sub-Committee (SSC), and other customer stakeholders as necessary. Provide well-thought-out recommendations on complex or ambiguous IT architecture issues. Coordinate with internal IT and Division stakeholders to determine requirements. Ensure that system improvements are successfully implemented and monitored to increase efficiency. Establish and communicate common goals and direction with the Mobility Team. Focus on Virtual Device Infrastructure (VDI) design and deployment using VMware or Citrix technologies; display the ability to evaluate vendors or products to build and deploy an end-to-end enterprise design based on client requirements, including server, network, storage, and end-user device infrastructure.

• Researches, designs, develops and/or modifies enterprise-wide systems and/or applications software.
• Designs, develops, codes, tests, and debugs complex new software products, or makes significant enhancements to existing software.
• Researches and integrates design strategies, product specifications, development schedules, and user expectations into product capabilities.
• Resolves complex hardware/software compatibility and interface design considerations.
• Conducts investigations and tests of considerable complexity.
• Researches emerging technologies to determine impact on application execution.
• Provides input to staff involved in writing and updating technical documentation such as user manuals, system documentation, and training materials.
• Troubleshoots complex problems and provides customer support for software operating systems and application issues.
• Advises hardware engineers on machine characteristics that affect software systems, such as storage capacity, processing speed, and input/output requirements.
• Prepares reports on analyses, findings, and project progress.
• Provides guidance and work leadership to less-experienced software engineers.
• May serve as a technical team or task leader.
• Maintains current knowledge of relevant technology as assigned.
• Participates in special projects as required.

Education Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical training, or work/military experience.


Preferred: MCSA: Windows Server 2012, MCITP: Enterprise Administrator on Windows Server 2008 or equivalent work experience

Qualifications 8-10 years of related systems engineering experience, with 5-8 years of directly related experience supporting:


o Windows 7/ 10 image deployment and development preferred
o Experience with App-V server installation, configuration, and maintenance.
o Experience scripting with a scripting language (prefer Powershell)
o Experience packaging and deploying applications via SCCM (SMS) through the creation of package sequences in Microsoft App-V.
o Experience creating, editing, upgrading and customizing existing App-V or Softgrid packaged sequences.
o Application virtualization, including VMware AppVolumes and ThinApp


Strong record of operational success managing application virtualization services.  Strong interpersonal and communications skills; capable of writing proposals or papers, acting as a vendor liaison, making presentations to customers or client audiences or professional peers, and working closely with upper management.


Ability to solve problems quickly and automate processes.  A solid understanding of an operating system; understands paging and swapping, inter-process communications, devices and what device drivers do, filesystem concepts (clustering, logical partitions), can use performance analysis to tune systems.

A solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts; understands principles of routing, client/server programming, and the design of consistent network-wide filesystem layouts.

Occasional on-call support may be required.
