Sidwell Friends, a coeducational Quaker school with campuses in Bethesda, Maryland, and Washington, DC, seeks a managing editor for its Department of Communications. The managing editor is responsible for the writing, editing, and production of the Alumni Magazine, as well as the School’s other print and digital publications, including the website and social media channels. The managing editor maintains the editorial integrity and ensures the stylistic consistency of all School digital and print materials. He/she conceptualizes story ideas for the Alumni Magazine and website; secures participation of alumni, faculty, students, and other community members in features and columns; and establishes editorial and production policies and procedures. The managing editor works with an in-house designer on design and production-related matters (print orders, proofs, corrections, final approvals, mailing list, etc.). This position reports directly to the Director of Communications and closely collaborates with other members of the Communications staff, as well as with colleagues in Institutional Advancement and elsewhere within the School community. The position is located on the School’s DC campus.

A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required (master’s preferred) with 5–7 years of senior-level experience in writing, editing, and production for print and digital publications. Basic photography skills and knowledge of design and layout principles are also necessary, as are a sense of humor, a commitment to excellence, the ability to meet deadlines, and an appreciation for the Quaker values underlying the School. This full-time (12-month) position begins July 1.
