Assistant Director of Debate, Center for Student Engagement - Division of Student Affairs

Georgetown University's Center for Student Engagement is a student-centered, fast-paced, high-energy environment. Contact with a diverse and dynamic student body is extensive and substantive. Team members work collaboratively within the office and with many other university-wide constituent groups. Staff members are expected to exercise a high degree of responsibility and independent judgment, and to work irregular and sometimes long hours during peak times of the academic year.

The Assistant Director of Debate, reporting to the Director of Debate, provides support to the administrative, coaching, and advising functions of the University's Policy Debate team and program, including but not limited to:

  • Attends approximately 10 to 12 intercollegiate debate tournaments each academic year.
  • Leads team efforts to research the annual debate topic.
  • Teaches students necessary research skills.
  • Independently performs and organizes research to ensure that students are prepared for tournaments.
  • Meets with students regularly to teach debate and speaking skills to help them succeed in policy debate competitions.
  • Organizes team travel to and from tournaments.
  • Assists in the execution of the annual summer workshop for high school students.
  • Participates in weekly debate team practices.
  • Assists in the recruiting efforts of prospective students.
  • Engages with alumni in sharing information about the team and opportunities for future development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least 1 to3 years of experience with National Debate Tournament style competitive policy debate.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide and diverse range of students and colleagues
