Patient Care Specialist - Emergency Room
The Patient Care Specialist (PCS) is responsible for the direct and indirect care of patients in the acute care setting. Using the Quality Caring Model, the PCS consistently demonstrates and role models clinical expertise in nursing appropriate to the department or specialty assigned. This position is responsible and accountable for:
•\tPrecepting and mentoring staff in application of the nursing process to plan and manage the care of patients with non-complex and complex biopsychosociospiritual needs.
•\tProviding clinical teaching and supervision and directing the most appropriate patient assignment for new and experienced staff.
•\tFacilitating and participating in staff development, including orientation and training.
•\tParticipating in performance evaluation and management including verbal coaching and counseling.
Participating in the development and/or revision of patient care standards and pathways.
•\tImproving patient outcomes through application of evidence based findings to advance nursing practice.
•\tDeveloping patient and staff education materials and serves as a consultant for patient and staff education needs.
•\tProactively identifying areas of concern and collaborates with the health care team to problem solve and find solutions.
•\tPromoting unit specific certifications and advances in education, and participation in the clinical advancement program.
•\tDeveloping and monitoring quality improvement issues and assures staff team members are competent to provide care for patients.

Minimum licensure/certification required (if applicable):
Current licensure by the Maryland State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.
BLS certified; additional Life Support training as applicable to unit requirements.
Department specific specialty certification required within six months of start of position.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:
Baccalaureate and/or Master's degree in nursing required. Master's degree preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of specialty specific experience in an acute care setting.
Advanced computer skills to include data entry and retrieval, including Microsoft specialty products.
Reads, writes, speaks and comprehends English language.
Ability to effectively communicate complex and comprehensive information thoroughly and succinctly.
Physical Requirements: Able to lift patients and patient care equipment up to 35 pounds. Must be able to push, pull and move patients, and patient care equipment. Must be able to bend body downward at waist and be able to kneel. Must be able to utilize computers for periods of time throughout shift.
Visual Acuity: Required to have close visual acuity to perform activities, such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing computer terminals; extensive reading; visual inspection, involving small defects, small parts and operation of machines; using measurement devices; assembly at distances close to eyes.
Auditory Acuity: Must have sufficient acuity to identify auditory alarms in noisy environments.
Environmental Conditions: Worker subject to hazards associated with hospital environment.
