The George Mason University Schar School of Policy and Government invites applications for a Chief Operating Officer (COO). About the Schar School: The Schar Schools main office is in Arlington, Va., where this position will be located, with a second office on the Fairfax campus. The school has 80 full-time teaching and research faculty, as well as experienced adjunct teaching faculty and professional staff. These faculty and staff serve approximately 700 undergraduate students, more than 1,000 masters students, and about 200 doctoral students in 14 different programs.
Our approach to scholarship is interdisciplinary and faculty represent more than a dozen academic disciplines, including political science, economics, geography, sociology, anthropology, engineering, history, law, medicine, and education. Many faculty members have held high-level positions in government and private organizations.
With more than 33,000 students, George Mason University is the largest state university in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Responsibilities: * Reports to and supports the Dean on administrative matters within the Schar School of Policy and Government--more specifically, the COO is responsible for: ** (1) Day-to-day operations of the school, and ** (2) Enhancing the internal organization processes and infrastructure that will allow the school to grow and fulfill its mission; * Works with the directors of fiscal services, human resources and planning, research, and development and alumni relations to oversee the overall functions of these offices, including financial and planning activities, reporting and monitoring of organizational performance metrics, and ensuring that relevant data are presented to the Dean and Leadership Team; * Works with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, providing oversight for the functions related to student admissions and enrollment and assuring that appropriate metrics are reported to the Dean and the Leadership Team; * Working with the faculty-related Associate Deans, oversees the various operational functions such as communication with faculty, faculty committees, etc.; * Assures that effective and efficient communication is taking place within the School and advise the Dean as to the status of the Schools progress towards its long-term financial stability as described in the Schar School Business Plan; * The department anticipates that the individual will teach one (1) class each academic year; and * Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Required Qualifications: * Must hold a terminal degree; * Must have a minimum of 10 years of experience working in the field; * Must have experience in higher education; * Must have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills; and * Must have administrative experience.
Preferred Qualifications: * Ph.D. is preferred; * Experience teaching in higher education; * Familiarity/experience in research at a university; and * Attention to detail and interest in public policy issues.
Salary: Salary will be commensurate with successful candidates knowledge, skills, and experience.
