This is a key managerial position in the Science Division that provides professional and scientific leadership to the USP Foods program through the development and maintenance of high quality, scientifically sound standards to assess the integrity, quality, and authenticity of food ingredients published in the Food Chemicals Codex as well as related programs and services including the USP Food Fraud Database and consultancy services to industry. The incumbent leads scientific operations and co-develops strategic directions for the Foods Program Unit with the Foods leader of Strategic Marketing and Program Operations. The (Senior) Director indirectly supervises the work with the Council of Experts (CoE) to ensure smooth flow of work between the scientific staff and the Expert Committees and provides these committees with appropriate scientific, editorial, and outreach support. The incumbent leads and develops his/her staff through mentoring and coaching to cultivate future science leaders and also serves as a member of the Science division’s leadership team. The (Senior) Director is responsible for maintaining and increasing reach and role of USP in providing scientific leadership in the quality of food ingredients with worldwide reach.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Co-leads with Strategic Marketing & Program Operations Program Unit head; develops and aligns on key strategies, long- and short-range plans for the Foods program unit, including resource prioritization, and compromises to find fair trade-offs between competing interests if necessary
  • Organizes group, identifies personnel needs, empower scientific staff and leads recruitment of scientific positions to ensure accomplishment of organizational and group targets
  • Establishes goals and metrics for the team, ensuring alignment with the program unit goals and organizational goals, and evaluates performance against established goals
  • Assures efforts involving monograph development, revision and harmonization are carried out in accordance with policies and priorities
  • Provides scientific and professional leadership to the Foods program and works cooperatively with the CoE Expert Committees and other staff components to ensure development and maintenance of high quality, scientifically sound standards for food ingredients
  • Responsible for operationalizing the technical delivery of USP Foods services offering (consulting, training, etc.)Monitors threats to the public health arising from unmet standards needs, and develops action plans in concert with stakeholders and relevant USP staff
  • Provides continuous communication of USP’s scientific activities to key stakeholders, including regulatory agencies, public health organizations with interest in food standards, manufacturer associations, and others
  • Pursues effective working relations with international food and food ingredient standards development organizations, regulatory bodies, and other technical institutes working on food ingredient quality and integrity standards and solutions.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relations with scientific and trade organizations in the fields of food, food ingredients, and nutrition.
  • Functions as the face of USP Foods Science to external stakeholder groups through speaking engagements, industry committee representation, etc.
  • Seeks opportunities for new products/tools or enrichment of existing Food Program Unit products/tools
  • Contributes to the successful achievement of organizational targets by leading the scientific staff to promptly address issues of public health
  • Meets production targets for the the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) and FCC Forum

Basic Qualifications:

Director:

  • M.S. Degree in Food Science or Food Technology, or a related relevant field. Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in the field of Food Science or Food Technology.
  • Food and food ingredient industry experience and broad contacts within the industry.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience supervising, leading teams, training, or mentoring of other staff members, including scientific staff.

 

Senior Director:

  • M.S. Degree in Food Science or Food Technology, or a related relevant field. Minimum of twelve (12) years of experience in the field of Food Science or Food Technology.
  • Food and food ingredient industry experience and broad contacts within the industry.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience supervising, leading teams, training, or mentoring of other staff members, including scientific staff.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in Food Science or Food Technology.
  • Strong interest in participating in scientific policy formulation and information with a passion for improving food ingredient quality and integrity
  • Strong understanding of global food safety regulatory frameworks, food standards development organizations, and intergovernmental organizations including Codex Alimentarius.
  • Broad vision of regulatory/policy relationships between food industry, FDA and other global agencies.
  • Scientific and industry recognition obtained through scientific publications, presentations, and national committee assignments and activities.
  • Excellent leadership skills with a strong results orientation. Proven leader in creating high performance work teams; a strong team builder with the ability to delegate effectively and a track record of training and developing scientific staff; a good team player with a consultative communication style.
  • A strong focus on quality and improvement; willingness to seek out fresh ideas and approaches to accomplishing the work of the Division.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with multiple stakeholders, including senior scientists, government agency leaders, highly technical professional staff, and international colleagues and partners.
  • Ability to guide senior scientists and industry leaders through effective collaboration and negotiation.
  • Outstanding oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to handle national and international presentations to large groups. Skill in fielding tough questions and responding effectively. Excellent listening skills. Must have strong communication skills to represent USP effectively at the national and international level.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • 1-8 Scientific Liaisons. This position may supervise other (senior) manager or director positions.
