Job Title: PLANT MACHINIST Closing Date/Time: Thu. 05/25/17 11:59 PM Eastern Time Salary: $54,267.20 - $82,929.60 Annually
Job Type: Full-Time Location: Water Pollution Control Bureau - 3402 S. Glebe Road, Arlington, Virginia       Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services is seeking an experienced machinist to use precision machine shop equipment to make repairs, perform preventive maintenance, rebuild, assemble, fabricate, and modify parts and equipment for the Water Pollution Control Plant and other County facilities. Arlington County's Water Pollution Control Plant has a 24-hour, 365-day continuous operation. The plant is an advanced wastewater treatment facility designed to treat 40-million gallons per day and employing approximately 90 full time employees

Specific duties include:
  • Performing trouble shooting to determine the nature of the problem, the cost/viability to repair, and to fabricate anew, or replace components;
  • Reading, interpreting and applying plans, specifications, and written and oral instructions in order to plan and lay out work;
  • Fabricating jigs and special tooling to facilitate work in the shop and occasionally fabricating parts for equipment that have no manufacturer's specifications or drawings or with parts too worn out for dimensioning, then preparing detailed drawings of parts machined for documentation and future reference;
  • Designing replacement components or redesigning components to increase the durability or longevity of equipment, or to facilitate the easier repair of equipment;
  • Producing specific cuts and finishes on various metals and tools;
  • Setting up and operating the full range of conventional machine tools and their attachments;
  • Welding various metals and equipment, i.e., tig, mig, stick, brazing, and torch cutting with conventional torch and plasma torch; and
  • Maintaining the shop inventory by ordering parts, tools, materials and issuing out shop tools and supplies, collecting reusable parts, and refurbishing them to include in inventory.
Work is sometimes performed under stressful, limited time frames in order to keep the plant and facilities in operation and is performed in a team environment; therefore training and working cooperatively with other employees is critical. This position is part of the Plant Maintenance section and while supervision is received from the Maintenance Supervisor, the work is performed with considerable independence.

The ideal candidate will be a problem solver with excellent analytical skills with a mechanical, machinist or welding background or related field, with considerable experience in the use of machines such as grinders, drills, presses, milling machines, metalizing equipment, lathes, and related equipment, preferably in an industrial or plant environment.
 Selection Criteria: Minimum: Graduation from a standard high school, vocational school, or equivalent plus three years' progressively responsible experience in the set-up and use of precision machinery such as lathes, grinders, drills, presses, milling machines, metalizing equipment, hole punch machine, hydraulic metal shear, 90-ton press break, and other related equipment used.

Substitution: Additional experience may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Post high school vocational training related to machinist work, including military and/or apprenticeship programs;
  • Experience performing maintenance and repairs in a wastewater or industrial type facility;
  • Welding certifications and/or extensive experience welding a wide variety of metals, ferrous and non-ferrous;
  • Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) such as MP2 or similar systems;
  • Experience working with a variety of metals such as steel, cast iron, wrought iron, aluminum, bronze, brass and stainless steel;
  • Experience making molds and pouring babbet bearings; and/or
  • Experience fabricating parts without plans and/or preparing drawings and documenting for future reference.

 Special Requirements: This position has a considerable amount of field activity, requiring physical dexterity, including repetitive bending, stooping, standing, climbing, lifting (up to 80 pounds), etc. Ability to pass the respirator fit test and to work in confined spaces. As a condition of employment and as necessitated by the work environment, employees may be required to wear various types of personal protective equipment in the performance of their duties.

Work situations may expose employee to flying metal chips, abrasive particles, and to metals. The environment includes exposure to drafts, noise, dust, grease, and dirt.

A valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's state of residence is required. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicants driving record.
 Additional Information: Work hours are from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Employee must be available for occasional call-back for emergencies after hours and on weekends.
