George Mason University Fiscal Services seeks an experienced tax professional to serve as part of the General Accounting team. Responsibilities: The Tax Specialist is responsible for Masonâ€™s tax processes with particular emphasis on unrelated business income tax, sales tax, nonresident alien taxation, and other tax issues related to public institutions of higher education and not for profit entities. Responsibilities include: * Assist the Tax Manager with the universitys annual Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) return and quarterly sales tax returns; * Perform review and reconciliation of transactions applicable to UBIT and sales tax reporting; * Assist with nonresident tax form 1042s business processes; and * Research and interpret federal and state tax laws, identify potential tax risks and compliance issues for the university, and communicate findings to management.
Required Qualifications: * Bachelorâ€™s degree or equivalent, demonstrated related experience (two to four years is preferred); and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience; * Knowledge of tax concepts related to higher education and not-for-profit entities, with an emphasis on UBIT and sales tax; * Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as superior analytical skills; * Ability to analyze technical procedures, federal and state regulations, and to apply tax concepts in a complex higher education environment; * Ability to work independently and within a team environment; and * Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Excel, as well as a demonstrated ability to work with large data sets.
Preferred Qualifications: * Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation; * Experience in tax accounting related to nonresident alien taxation, global tax reporting, and Value Added Tax (VAT); * Experience working professionally in a higher education environment is strongly preferred; and * Combination of public accounting and industry experience is preferable.
