Special Police Officer - Georgetown Law Public Safety

The Special Police Officer supports the university community by establishing and maintaining an environment in which all community members can go safely about their varied activities in the best interest of the university.  S/he provides services to protect the life, well-being, and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, and others through policing, patrol, event security, investigation, and emergency response as outlined in general orders and special orders, as directed by superior officers, and as proscribed by Georgetown Law Public Safety, in the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Training Academy, and other departmental trainings.  The Special Police Officer has duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Patrols - while carrying baton and pepper spray - on foot, on bicycle, and/ or motor vehicles; responds to emergencies; makes arrests and issues citations; and enforces all United States, District of Columbia laws and University rules and regulations.
  • Accurately and thoroughly prepares incident reports; safeguards information and evidence to ensure  successful l follow up and resolution; assists in preliminary investigations  of incidents as necessary; supports and provides assistance to been victims of crime; and attends court whenever necessary, regardless of other commitments.
  • In the absence of the Communications Officer, answers all telephone calls; responds to emergencies, burglar alarms, fire alarms and requests for service; monitors all burglar/security alarms, cameras and fire alarms; and tracks University Police activities at dispatch.
  • Conducts speaking presentations on topics identified through surveys and community feedback, under the supervision of the shift supervisor, assistant supervisor or coordinators; and, in support of the University's higher education objectives, becomes well acquainted with members of the University community.
  • Serves as a liaison to internal various constituencies (students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, visitors, neighbors) and external agencies (for example, Metropolitan Police Department, DC Fire Department, FBI, and the Secret Service) and is often the "face" of University safety.

Requirements

  • High school degree - college coursework preferred
  • At least 2 years of  experience in  security, communications, computer technology  or related  field - year for year substitution of college education permissible
  • Previous experience in and responsibility for critical incident response and notification procedures
  • Previous experience and/or training in situations involving sexual assault and discrimination (including, but not limited to, religious, racial, and sexual orientation).
  • Qualification for a Special Police Commission
  • Successful pass of a drug screening test and psychological evaluation
  • Possession of a valid driver's license
  • Knowledge of criminal and civil law and of police practices and procedures. 
  • Ability to perform complex operations under stress
  • Ability to interpret written material, verbal orders, and computer commands.
  • Ability to communicate effectively - using good grammar in both writing and speech
  • Minimum typing skills with ability to use basic computer programs such as word processing and database. 
  • Excellent customer service skills - tact, a courteous demeanor and welcoming  attitude in order to deal effectively with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members 
  • Respect the use of police powers in relation to a University environment.  
  • Availability and willingness to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the department - to include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off

The Special Police Officer position is considered as essential under the University policy guidelines and therefore subject to be on call when necessary.
