Position Description

The University of Maryland Network Operation Center (NOC) is responsible for monitoring and managing the network. This position is necessary to monitor, detect, analyze, troubleshoot and resolve network outages. This position will also report issues and follow escalation procedures for both internal and vendor escalations. This is a globally accessible, high availability, fast paced and business critical 24×7 environment.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with preferred emphasis in Telecommunications, Information Systems, or Computer Science.



At least 5 years of demonstrated experience with designing and supporting with data networks.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of Cisco IOS, network protocol analysis, premise wiring including fiber optics.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills as well as some level of project management. Willing to work different shifts between the hours of 7AM and 10PM. On-call network support is required. Additional time may be required as needed or directed by management.



Demonstrated experience with some or all of the following: switched Ethernet, LAN switches (Cisco), wireless (Cisco), firewalls, VoIP, routers, WAN technologies, remote troubleshooting, routed protocols, routing protocols and network diagnostic tools.

Must have network design experience in order to comprehend the network infrastructure and services that require operational support.

Ability to demonstrate a strong knowledge of and support for a predominately Cisco environment, a working knowledge of network testing equipment, and familiarity with wiring, including fiber optics.

Knowledge of the various transports such as Gigabit Ethernet, TLS, and DWDM services.

Familiarity with wireless (802.11) authentication, security and IOS, Cisco IOS software and Catalyst OS interfaces, Windows OS, Mac OS and user level familiarity with Unix OS.

Experience with providing coverage for the campus Network Operations Center (NOC) call handling, trouble shooting, administration systems including, trouble ticketing system (ServiceNow), network management system (Spectrum), and work order system (Pinnacle).

Experience with electrical power and with supporting a large wireless system.

Willing to work different shifts between the hours of 7AM and 10PM.

Ability to communicate effectively including good written and oral communication skills and good interpersonal skills is required.


Additional Certifications

Working toward or obtained networking certifications is a plus (CCNA/CCNP).

Physical Demands

Incumbent will be required to perform “on-call” duties required to maintain various networks. Incumbent will be required to perform “on-call” duties required to maintain various networks. Some stress factors may be involved due to the nature of the operation and the complexity of duties. This job requires the ability to install networking equipment that includes climbing ladders, lifting network equipment, working with hand tools, and accessing mechanical rooms.
