Senior Full Stack JavaScript Engineer, PBS KIDSDEPARTMENT: PBS KIDS DigitalSTATUS: Full-time, Exempt, Project (This position is fully funded by the Ready to Learn Grant through September 2017. There is a potential of an extension that is subject to annual appropriation.)JOB OBJECTIVE:The Ready To Learn (RTL) project is a joint initiative of PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). It focuses on the development and dissemination of content across media and platforms to improve learning, with an emphasis on building science and literacy skills for children ages 2-8. CPB and PBS will partner with producers, science and literacy experts, outreach partners, and evaluators to develop learning content and employ innovative strategies to increase use at home, in the community, and in schools.The Senior Full Stack Engineer spearheads implementation of new digital products and frameworks developed under the RTL grant. The incumbent will work across departments to bring products from conception to reality, ensuring that architectural, design, and quality assurance needs are initially met and continually updated throughout the products existence.ESSENTIAL DUTIES:Collaborate with Engineering team, reviewing architectural requirements and translating them into public-facing and internal applications. Mentor more junior developers while receiving guidance from more senior developers.Collaborate with external partners in the fields of educational technology, natural language processing, speech synthesis, and neural nets to architect and develop framework components of large-scale applications.Partner with Product Managers to understand product needs and scope; develop corresponding, realistic engineering schedules and high-quality product requirements; and monitor ongoing product progress, adjusting schedules and requirements to ensure that objectives are met in a timely and budget-conscious manner.Collaborate with Designers to build and implement highly interactive and fun experiences for kids, parents, and educators.Work with Quality Assurance team, evaluate products and make appropriate adjustments to deliver high quality engineered software products that meet standards set forth by management.Maintain knowledge of software quality best practices and industry trends (particularly regarding testing and code standards); propose related new strategies and practices that are appropriate and applicable to the goals of PBS; and assist senior management in implementing approved new initiatives. MINIMUM EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:3-5 years of work experience in software development, preferably with emphasis on the following areas: Modern JavaScript (Node, ES6). HTML5, CSS3, advanced frontend interaction JavaScript including Canvas and DOM. PHP, Twig, and CMS development. Writing reusable front-end components for CMS integration. Collaborating with in-house, remote, and contractor teams.Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related field.An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED:Advanced experience in modern JavaScript technologies, including Node.Advanced experience in creating, debugging, and deploying web applications and websites.Experience in creating web-based mobile applications using Cordova.Knowledge of release management process and disciplines, including source control and deployment.Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to work with colleagues throughout the organization.Ability to act as a resourceful, self-directed, and creative problem-solver who can meet aggressive deadlines.Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as strong listening and presentation skills.Superior organizational skills and attention to details.PBS is an Equal Opportunity Employer of Minorities, Women, Protected Veterans, and Individuals with Disabilities
