Duties The successful selectee will perform the following duties: * Conduct periodic inspections and tests on boilers, unfired pressure vessels, and related auxiliaries to detect deficiencies and recommend corrective action. * Determine damage to heating, fuel power boilers, and associated equipment when planning repair and modification projects * Inspect tubes for blisters, corrosion, erosion, and external wasting away from vanadium attack * Install burning mechanisms located in structures (eg, dormitories, recreation facilities, residential housing) with individual heating systems * Prepare boilers (eg, power, process, heat) for a public works inspector to make annual inspection of pressure parts Travel Required * Not Required Relocation Authorized * No ## Job Requirements Key Requirements * Must be a US Citizen. * Males must be registered or exempt from Selective Service. www.sss.gov * Must be determined suitable for federal employment. * Must participate in the direct deposit pay program. * May be required to successfully complete a probationary/trial period. * See Other Information section for additional requirements. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Boiler Plant Equipment mechanic without more than normal supervision performed the following duties: 1) installation, repair and maintanence of power, process and/or heat boilers; 2) use technical manuals, manufacturer's manuals and special instructions to determine replacement, service, or repair of key parts or components of the heating system; 3) use shop mathematics to compute fuel consumption rates, heat generating units, and air-to-fuel ratio; and 4) use standard and/or specialized hand power tools (eg, adjustable wrenches, pneumatic hammers, pipe cutting equipment and drill presses). Moderate to heavy physical exertion, exposure to high temperatures and coal dust. **Working Conditions**: Work is indoors and outdoors. Exposure to constant noise and heat from the boilers and machinery. Working areas may be damp as well as dusty. Ash handling areas may be damp as well as dusty. The major hazards are burns from fire, hot water, steam, acid or caustic soda; loss of hearing or injury or death from explosions.
