Electrical Engineer (GS-0850-13)
This position is located in the Fire Research Laboratory (FRL) within the Office of Science and Technology (OST) in Beltsville, Maryland. Serves as a technical expert practitioner concerning the evaluation of products, equipment and components having electrical or electronic functions and mechanical features with regard to failure modes resulting in fire causation.
Position requires an average or better dexterity and visual acuity to perform the type of work required for this position. Some assignments may require considerable strenuous physical exertion and lifting of object not exceeding 40 pounds. Work consists of fieldwork, whether conducting testing or in support of criminal investigations at fire scenes, which may include moderate to high degree of risk including but not limited to exposure to fire gases and toxins, fall and collapse hazards, electricity and other unforeseen hazards. The work requires wearing full and half face respirators and requires the incumbent to conduct themselves in a safe manner at all times.
Engineers that participate in National Response Team callouts must be HAZMAT certified.

To qualify for this position, you must meet one of the basic requirements and/or one of the additional qualification requirements listed below.
Basic Requirement: Degree in professional engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR Combination of education and experience--college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. In addition to the basic requirements, the following must be met:
Specialized Experience: To qualify for the GS-13: You must have at least one year of specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-12 grade level.
Specialized experience for this position is defined as the following:
- The mastery of the principles and practices of electrical or electronic engineering.
- In depth knowledge of Federal laws, regulations and guidelines pertaining to fire and forensic evidence.
- Knowledge of the safety practices standard to the engineering industry and unique to bomb or arson crime scenes.
