The Communications Manager is the key point person for internal and external communications for the IAM National Benefit Funds office that administers retirement and health & welfare plan benefits.  This position is responsible for leading and developing the Communication Department employees to create and implement communication strategies that support the objectives and goals of the organization.  S/he along with the Communication Department team also supports the Executive Leadership Team, General Counsel and Department Managers with their communication efforts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the Communications Department
  • Lead and develop the Communication Department employees;  inspire employees to be engaging and effective communicators
  • Derive key communication strategies from business objectives in consultation and collaboration with internal stakeholders
  • Create, write and edit communications including newsletters, brochures and letters
  • Coordinate mailings such as Annual Funding Notice, Summary Plan Descriptions and 401(k) 404(a) Fee Disclosure booklet and QDIA/ACA notices. Manage text document and design file creation, review and approval processes for procurement of printing and mailing services from vendors. Ensure compliance with governmental standards and deadlines.
  • Manage updates of Benefit Funds websites.  Monitor online user activities
  • Prepare and present department metrics reports for Executive Leadership Team
  • Work with external 401(k) Plan Recordkeeper to produce IAM National 401(k) Plan communication materials
  • Develop educational videos for the Funds
  • Maintain archive of important Plan documents, disclosures and other materials on network drive and intranet
  • Evaluate and deploy technology and best practices to support business objectives

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in communication, public relations, journalism or related field.  Comparable related work experience may substitute college coursework
  • Must have 3 - 5 years of relevant work experience
  • 3 or more years of management/leadership experience

SKILLS

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to digest and distill complex subjects into clear messages; strong presentation abilities, written and oral
  • Excellent grammar, editing and proofreading skills
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Working knowledge of HTML or CMS
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite - InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Familiarity with SharePoint and video creation software
  • Strong leadership skills with aptitude for making strategic decisions that produce positive results
  • Must be able to manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines; excellent time management skills and attention to detail
  • Strong sense of initiatives, flexibility and cooperation in undertaking complex workload and tight deadlines; ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to generate ideas and think creatively
  • Experience with managing outside print process
  • Knowledge of retirement and health & welfare plans preferred but not required
