The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key member of Chavez Schools leadership team, responsible for the fiscal health of the organization. The CFO develops and effectively manages  the Finance and Accounting team, and oversees the vital accounting, banking, budgeting, and financial planning functions for the entire organization. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CFO will build an efficient financial organization that provides exceptional service and support to the four campuses, to ensure their continued financial success.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


Financial Strategy


  • Serve as senior-most financial advisor to Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors on major strategic decisions; lead the design and execution of Chavez Schools financial strategy


    Represent Chavez Schools to its financial partners, including financial institutions, potential investors, donors, and auditors


    Conduct analyses to inform operational decision making and long-term strategic planning.


    Develop decision-making frameworks for new initiatives that maximize the impact of financial resources


    Lead the processes to build annual and multi-year budgets to drive the organization and realize each department’s goals


    Frequently review processes in order to optimize investment of unused resources


    Provide risk management analyses and  proactively review, anticipate, and address potential risks of all kinds affecting the network


Financial Operations and Reporting


  • Design and maintain effective internal controls, policies and procedures that comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulatory laws as well as rules for financial and tax reporting


    Manage internal and external reporting, balancing accurate data and compelling presentation with cost-effectiveness


    Supervise day-to-day fiscal operations to ensure efficient and effective flow of daily funds


    Develop tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the executive team, departmental managers, and the Audit and Finance Committees of the Board of Directors


    Ensure successful completion of annual audits, IRS filings, and other mandated financial reports


Team Leadership


  • Build and lead a cohesive finance and accounting team, including third party financial service providers, in the execution of all financial functions, and in service to Chavez Schools stakeholders and mission


    Manage direct reports, supporting and developing their potential


    Manage overall team capacity, professional development, and performance management to ensure that goals are met




Chavez Schools  CFO candidates will have the following qualifications, skills, and attributes:


  • Bachelor's degree required; MBA or equivalent graduate degree preferred


    Minimum of five years of work experience in an executive level finance or accounting role, handling budgets in excess of $15M


    Significant experience with nonprofit and/or school finance; knowledge of fund accounting strongly preferred


    Problem-solver with the ability to turn data into insights and anticipate challenges and opportunities; relentless results-orientation


    Significant knowledge of treasury functions including debt covenants, cash flow and financial ratio projections, and banking


    Knowledge of general accounting procedures and experience leading the budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management processes for an organization or large group


    Excellent track record of leading, managing, and developing high-performing teams


    Strong organizational skills, ability to set up systems and processes to streamline accounting and finance functions


    Familiarity with one or more major accounting systems and ERP platforms


    Excellent business writing, oral communication, and presentation skills


    Ability to work under pressure and remain calm in the midst of many changing circumstances; demonstrated flexibility and collaborative work style


    Demonstrated passion for the mission, vision and values of Chavez Schools; comfort and willingness to actively participate in the school community
