The director researches and analyzes financial and accounting data in order to help the University make well-informed decisions. In this role, the director monitors financial results, completes financial analyses, writes reports, and presents the findings.The director analyzes University projects and processes, compares the University to other benchmark organizations, and evaluates expenses for alignment with approved budgets. In addition, the director builds return on investment (ROI) models, identifies alternative solutions, and present findings and conclusions to the APUS president, executives, and senior managers.The director, in partnership with the APUS president and other senior colleagues, will lead APUS in growing the University system. APUS, through its two institutions, American Public University and American Military University, is currently educating distance learners studying in 50 states and more than 100 countries. The director evaluates monthly expenses for alignment with the budget while working with University senior management on the development and implementation of action plans related to expense variances.The director understands capitalization rules and acts as University leader to finance related to program and other capitalization; and builds models for faculty pay, compensation, and ROI on projects and programs. The director will also analyze projects and contracts for investment to satisfy ROI objectives.The director analyzes expenditures by department and/or process based on the following categories: non-discretionary expense and capital to run the business, discretionary operational expense and capital expense to enhance offerings and core business processes, and discretionary operational expense and capital expense to build new offerings. In addition, the director gathers benchmark data for comparison to reported and expected results. The director maintains knowledge of best policies and practices in higher education finance to assure sound and ethical application that protects the Universitya€ (TM) s reputation and other assets.The director works with all of the finance departments to collect data used to manage the University on an ongoing basis. In addition, the director drafts presentations to explain findings and conclusions to APUS management and employees. Requirements Required SkillsThe successful candidate has a minimum of three years of proven relevant work experience including financial modeling. Strong analytical skills with a solid understanding of technical corporate finance concepts (NPV, IRR, cost of capital) are essential; as well as strong accounts skills, particularly in analyzing financial statements.The ideal candidate has strong spreadsheet, word processing, and presentation software skills (Microsoft Office). Experience with Tableau software is strongly preferred.Overall, the successful candidate has strong attention to detail, and excellent problem solving and decision making abilities; along with the ability to organize, interpret and present complex, detailed financial information to senior management for decision-making purposes.Managing multiple projects, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, are essential in this role. The candidate possesses excellent interpersonal skills and has the ability to maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers. Additionally, the candidate has the ability to work effectively in a collaborative work environment. The successful candidate has exceptional verbal and written communication skills.Required ExperienceConsideration for this role will only be given to candidates who have a Bachelora€ (TM) s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field. A Mastera€ (TM) s degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in Finance, is strongly preferred. Preferential consideration will be given to candidates who possess a professional certification (CPA, CMA, CFA, etc.).
