The position is a Type Commander Network On-Site Representative for Submarine Atlantic Fleet (NOSR).  In short, this is not a technician position but a supervisory/mentor position to aide ship’s force in maintaining the shipboard LAN in compliance with DoD, Navy and SUBFOR instructions.  There is very little travel and consistent hours.


The NOSR is the Type Commander’s (SUBLANT) Representative for all Submarine LAN (SubLAN) issues.  SubLAN is considered to be both the classified and unclassified networks including all hardware and software.  This is not a Helpdesk or Network Administrator position but a TYCOM Liaison to the fleet.

You would be expected to either acquire and/or maintain the necessary certification and education requirements of DODINST 8570.1M for IAT III or higher.  This includes formal documented training on an Operating System (Windows XP, 7, 8, 8.1; Server 2003, 2008, 2012; Linux LPIC-2; Cisco CCNA-Security) and commercial certification in a Network Security discipline (CISSP, GIAC GCIH, GIAC GSEC, CISA,…)



1) Provide onboard and TYCOM administration support, technical guidance, on-the-job/over-the-shoulder training, monitoring of Submarine Local Area Network (SubLAN) systems at the command, ISIC/Submarine Squadrons and COMSUBLANT levels as directed.

2) Provide NOSR support for SubLAN systems, limited non-SubLAN network support and non-SubLAN client support.

3) Provide instruction and training to fleet SubLAN Administrators on local, TYCOM, Fleet and Navy LAN maintenance and administration procedures (system backups, switch configurations, software configurations, etc).

4) Conduct periodic assessments of shipboard LAN administration and maintenance capabilities.

5) Provide training to ship's force LAN Administrators on SubLAN maintenance, administration and security procedures.

6) Generate written reports, briefs and presentations as directed.

7) Submarines may be located in public and private shipyards that require special access and often require parking a distance away from the submarine.

8) Attend training to gain and maintain all necessary IT/IA certifications and designations.


Education 1. Bachelors Degree in a related discipline.

 2. Masters Degree preferred.




Minimum of 7 years of experience providing technical support in the operation, maintenance, installation, testing/evaluation, troubleshooting and repair of US Navy local area networks, systems and applications (ADNS, ISNS, SIPR/NIPR, NTCSS/NIAPS, NTDPS, CANES and COMPOSE). Must have experience providing assistance to network users and administrators through local and distant support requests. Must have a knowledge of standard HW/SW systems network standards and operations functions, communications protocols and diagnostic tools to recover data, analyze customer problems, configure, install and maintain networked systems/equipment to accomplish LAN system troubleshooting, fault isolation, technical oversight and preventative and corrective maintenance and repairs.

This position is a Cyber IT/Cybersecurity Workforce position. Applicants are required to comply with the DON Cyber IT/CSWF Program requirements of SECNAV M-5239.2. Applicants must be able to earn and maintain necessary credentials for Cyber IT/CSWF category and specialty area as described in SECNAV M-5239.2 (June 2016). Applicants are also required to participate in a continuous learning program as described in SECNAVINST 1543.2 which includes a minimum of 40 hours of Cyber IT/CSWF related continuous learning annually.
