Every day, our CIS Assistants (OA) respond to written and oral inquiries from the public, other organizations, governmental agencies, Congressional offices and provide information and assistance on applications to applicants/petitioners and/or their legal representatives.
This position of CIS ASSISTANT (OA) starts at a salary of $36,281 (GS-05 grade level), with promotion potential to $58,428 (GS-07 grade level).

GS-5: You qualify at the GS-5 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in the federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:
- Reviewing applications for benefits for accuracy, validity, and proper form and format; and,
- Using various computer software programs to produce office support materials on benefits.
- You may substitute successful completion of 4 years of education above high school for the experience required at the GS-5 level. This education must have been obtained from an accredited college or university. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester or 45 quarter hours.
GS-6: You qualify at the GS-6 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:
- Reviewing and screening routine applications and petitions for immigration benefits;
- Using computer indices to determine a subject's current immigration status; and,
- Providing routine information and assistance on applications for immigration benefits.
GS-7: You qualify at the GS-7 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the GS-6 level in the federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:
- Providing assistance on complex applications and petitions for immigration benefits to applicants and/or their legal representatives;
- Analyzing and evaluating cases where screening or resolution of requests for immigration benefits have been delayed; and,
- Informing inquirers verbally or in writing of problems encountered and action required.

Volunteer work helps build criteria competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Typing: You must be able to type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with 3 or fewer errors.
General Office Skills: You must possess knowledge of general office automation software, practices and procedures.
Probationary Period: You may be required to serve a probationary period of 1 year.

Current Federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the lower grade or equivalent grade band in the Federal service. The Time-in-Grade requirement must be met by 11:59pm (Eastern Time) on the closing date of this announcement 04/21/2017.
Residency Requirement: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. This residency requirement states that candidates must have, for three of the last five years immediately prior to applying for this position; (1) resided in the United States; OR (2) worked for the United States Government as an employee overseas in a Federal or Military capacity, OR (3) been a dependent of a U.S. Federal or Military employee serving overseas.
