This is a hands-on, highly technical position that supports the foods standard-setting activities and related programs for the Foods Program Unit within USP's Science Division (SD). The incumbent will be capable of supporting several areas within USP's foods program including development and technical stewardship of Food Chemicals Codex testing standards, data entry and analysis for USP's food fraud database, and supporting USP's food fraud consulting services. These activities require the ability to identify and critically evaluate published information on food fraud, data and supplier documents to assess food fraud vulnerabilities, and new food testing scientific needs. The successful candidate may develop proposals, coordinate, and lead specific technical studies related to food testing. The incumbent is experienced with presenting technical talks to food industry and regulators to solicit feedback on USP's technical work and to enhance USP's visibility. The incumbent recognizes when additional expertise is needed and he/she has the ability to put together and manage selected expert panels to advance and advocate for USP's food science. He/she establishes and maintains a network of contacts outside USP, stays abreast of new developments in food safety, quality, and authenticity, and engages other scientific staff to discuss topics in food protection. Roles and Responsibilities:Provides scientific expertise to USP's food program with a focus on food quality and purity standardsEstablishes and maintains good contacts and working relationships to industry, trade associations and other relevant stakeholders with the goal of obtaining their cooperation for the development of new USP standards, products, and services;Performs the critical evaluation of technical data related to food testing, food fraud, and supplier and supply chain managementHas the ability to establish and execute complex research projects with internal and external partners as needed;Establishes strong relationships with other USP program units and departmentsResponds to telephone and written inquiries pertaining to food programs;Keeps abreast of current global trends and developments in related scientific fields and shares learnings with supervisor and colleagues;Fosters communication within USP's scientific departmentsCommunicate effectively with stakeholders from industry, academia, scientific organizations, and regulatory agencies.Assists in the formation of USP Expert Committees/Panels and in planning and organizing their work assignments; Provides assistance and guidance to Expert Committees/Panels; Maintains productive working relationships with Expert Committees, Project Teams, and Expert Panels.Serves as a representative of USP at professional meetings, trade shows, and conferences; Gives public presentations on matters related to USP's food programTechnically supports USP's food fraud solutions and assists in delivering food fraud related products and services. Basic Qualifications:Associate Scientific Liaison:Ph.D. or equivalent in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or allied field with at least 5 years relevant experience: MS in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or allied field with at least 7 years of relevant experience; or BS in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or allied field with at least 9 years of relevant experience.Scientific Liaison:Ph.D. or equivalent in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or allied field with at least 8 years relevant experience; MS in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or allied field with at least 10 years of relevant experience; or BS in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or allied field with at least 15 years of relevant experience. Preferred Qualifications:Experience developing and validating food analytical methods and experience performing multivariate data analysis is preferred. Experience in food safety and quality systems and audit schemes, and suppler and supply chain management systems is required. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English are required. Knowledge of Spanish or Mandarin is a plus. Solid understanding of the food ingredient industry, the processed food industry, and the associated regulatory frameworks nationally and internationally is a plus. Excellent and proven multi-tasking and time management skills. Track record of consistently delivering projects on time and with high quality. Ability to rapidly and expertly assess complex technical issues. Proficient with analytical methods for food ingredients including instrumental analysis (eg, HPLC, CE, NMR, ICP, AA, KF, UV, LC/MS, GC/MS). Ability to review, analyze, interpret and report on data from various analytical tests and supplier management systems and audit. Ability to embrace and lead change. Candidates should be proficient in developing and delivering technical presentations to a variety of audiences and possess project management skills. Extremely adaptable and strong willingness to learn. Strong interpersonal and presentation skills. Solid knowledge of MS Office, internet research, and database searches.
