Assistant Director, Accounts Payable - Division of Financial Affairs

The Assistant Director assists with implementing the University's overall strategy to reduce transaction costs, control financial risk, and improve customer service quality across the entire Accounts Payable function, particularly as Georgetown transitions to the new Workday-based Georgetown Financial Management System (GMS).  S/he Director oversees day-to-day Payment Services for the University and supervises the AP Customer Service team responsible for approximately $300 million in payments for purchased goods and services. Reporting to the Director of Accounts Payable, the Assistant Director has duties that include but are not limited to:


  • Oversees daily operations of payment Services.
  • Monitors and balances workload of team.
  • Provides staff development, supervision and counseling.
  • Tracks accounts payable aging.
  • Performs year-end closing and audit responsibilities.

Customer Service

  • Promotes exceptional customer service.
  • Problem solves in response to customer and vendor inquiries.
  • Assesses overall team performance and improves productivity and responsiveness.
  • Ensures an overall efficient and timely payment process.

Special Processes

  • Performs special processes - for example, cancelled checks, stop payments, corrections, void task checks, transmission of positive pay, and ACH files.
  • Coordinates, plans and implements backup systems for staff absences, fluctuation in workflow, and inclement weather.


  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least 5 years of accounting experience, to include leadership experience in a fast paced accounting office, experience in managing month end close processes,  and experience with external auditors  
  • Strong ability to provide quality, professional customer service and resolve problems independently
  • Flexibility and willingness to making or responding to changes in operations in a quick and appropriate manner
  • Ability to supervise staff and manage multiple projects and people
  • Customer Service skills and ability to develop and present meaningful training seminars
  • Excellent verbal  and written communication skills and technical writing proficiency
  • Ability to work under multiple deadlines
  • Advanced accounting skills and proficiency working with Excel spreadsheets
