This position is located in the Office of Administration for the National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington, DC. For more than 200 years, the National Mall has symbolized our nation and its democratic values, which have inspired the world. The National Mall - the great swath of green in the middle of our capital city and stretching from the foot of the United States Capitol to the Potomac River - is the premiere civic and symbolic space in our nation.

What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program which is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school.

This is an indefinite Pathways Internship appointment. Students who successfully complete the internship program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent appointment or a term (1-4 years in duration) appointment without further competition. If converted to a permanent or term appointment, the anticipated target position will be Budget Technician GS-0561-5/6/7; however, the target position may change based on the need of the organization at that time.

What are the Eligibility Requirements?

In order to be eligible for an appointment under the Pathways Internship Program:

  • you must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the institution (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum); and
  • enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved homeschool; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum; and
  • students must be in good standing according to their institution.

You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program.

This position is year round and excepted to start Summer 2017. You must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment the entire time serving on this appointment. Failure to provide proof of continuing enrollment will result in an incomplete application and you will not be considered further.

The work schedule may be full or part-time depending on class schedule and the needs of the park.

    For the GS-05 level: Have successfully completed 4 academic years of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's or equivalent degree. OR

    Have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal government (I understand that specialized experience is normally work performed in a controlled environment). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: assisting in the preparation and maintenance of an annual budget; making financial reviews to ensure allocations are not exceeded; tracking obligations, expenditures, and accounts receivable, and; preparing expenditure transfers and other adjustment vouchers. OR

    Have an equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education and experience.

    For the GS-0599-06 level: Have bachelor's or equivalent degree and six months of graduate level education. OR

    Have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal government (I understand that specialized experience is normally work performed in a controlled environment). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: assisting in the preparation and maintenance of an annual budget; making financial reviews to ensure allocations are not exceeded; tracking obligations, expenditures, and accounts receivable, and; preparing expenditure transfers and other adjustment vouchers. OR

    Have an equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education and experience.

    For the GS-0599-07 level: Have successfully completed 1 full year of graduate level education. OR

    Have not completed the 1 full year of graduate level education as indicated above, but I am eligible under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision based on class standing, grade-point average, or honor society membership. OR

    Possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level. Examples of experience include: Adjusting, revising and updating current year operating budgets; advising management of financial review findings; tracking obligations, expenditures and accounts receivable, and; providing technical assistance to personnel in accounts receivable, accounts payable, reimbursements, voucher preparation and examination, and preparation of financial reports.

    OR Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Appointment will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation. Under the requirements of the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12), all new Federal Employees must pass a background investigation. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
    • New employees of the Department of the Interior must identify a financial institution for direct deposit of net pay within 30 days of entrance on duty.
    • Applicants must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license or District of Columbia driver's license.
    • This is not a drug tested position.
    • Trial/probationary period may be required.
