The George Mason University Office of Housing and Residence Life is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Coordinator, University Life Safety and Emergency Management. Responsibilities: This position serves as a full-time professional staff presence for all university life safety and emergency management operations in university residence halls and other university life facilities. The incumbent will: * Directly oversee operations during evenings, weekends, and holidays to include the response to emergencies; * Ensure that a physically safe environment is maintained at all times on campus--activities to facilitate a safe environment include, but are not limited to: facilities/building management, occupational health and safety (students and employees), fire code compliance, and lock/access control troubleshooting; * Supervise undergraduate and graduate staff who focus on maintaining safe communities through health and safety inspections, building facilities/maintenance tours, and emergency facilities/maintenance response; * Maintain a close relationship with department colleagues and external customers to ensure university life safety and emergency management provides effective night/weekend support to the mission of the university and the department; and * Develop initiatives to enhance these operations within the department.
Public Safety Compliance: * Uses complex criteria, data collection, and interviewing techniques to apply knowledge, training, or experience to facilitate a resolution of assigned responsibilities within public safety compliance of moderate to difficult nature; * Develop and manage a system of timely and effective emergency response public safety concerns and emergencies within the division to include, but not be limited to: the tracking and reporting of information, communication process with on-call staff, and transition of information in conjunction with the Assistant Director; * Evaluate work methods and procedures to recommend an improvement in quality customer service with a public safety mindset; * Develop and manage a residential facilities, maintenance and safety program to provide services during the evenings, weekends, and holidays to include, but not be limited to the on-going development and evaluation of positions and responsibilities; * Conduct periodic industry and regulation research on student-centered facilities/maintenance and safety programs in higher education to produce a comprehensive report that will utilize key findings in change management; and * Communicate with stakeholders regarding safety concerns, inspections, follow-up on corrective actions.
Program Management: * Conduct bimonthly meetings with direct report employees; * Manage department standard operating procedures, policies, inventory, and supplies in conjunction with best practices, laws, and regulations; * Collaborate with the stakeholders to identify trends and support initiatives to address violations of the student code of conduct or university policies as it relates to safety and emergency management; * Manage the departmentâ€™s response and coordination with Disability Services and any requests for accommodations with Housing and Residence Life as it relates to the safety of occupant(s); * Maintain and manage the review and distribution of work orders for the department, including but not limited to the tracking of work orders for correction submitted and the assignment of work orders to employees within the department; and * Define and routinely update the role of the student positions--these student positions will work with the Coordinator and Assistant Director to track facility concerns, follow up with students who report facilities issues, conduct health and safety inspections, manage public spaces, and setup/tear down campus spaces for special events.
Training, Supervision and Assessment: * Supervise two graduate professional assistants focused on conducting of facility inspections overnight; * Manage the training, supervision and ensure performance management practices for all student positions within the department are completed by graduate professional staff; * Manage the recruitment and selection of student positions that are within area of responsibility; * Ensure human resource policies, procedures, and best practices are used to maintain hiring, compensation, time reporting, and other payroll and human consistency with university and department policies and procedures; * Collaborate with full-time staff and graduate professional staff on the biannual training of employees; * Provide ongoing feedback and establish processes that ensure accountability; * Establish and implement assessment tools to evaluate program efficacy, efficiency and job performance; and * Create and regularly review a comprehensive manual/resource guide to outline operating procedures for employees.
Departmental Responsibilities: * Serve as an ethical steward of institutional and departmental resources; * Serve as a member of the Environmental Health and Safety team; * Identify ways to best utilize resources to meet the goals and objectives of the department, and support the goals and vision of the division of University Life and the university; * Perform other duties as assigned by the Director, University Life Safety and Emergency Management; and * Other duties or responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications: * Bachelors degree (higher education or public administration is preferred), or and equivalent combination of training and work experience; and * Demonstrated experience in student affairs, emergency management/homeland security, facilities management, or comparable experience in a university setting.
Preferred Qualifications: * Masterâ€™s degree in higher education or public administration; * Experience in a large, dynamic university environment with diverse student and employee bodies; and * Knowledge of public safety compliance.
