Works with the Fairfax County Police Department's Financial Resources Division as a finance expert. The responsibilities for this position include:
  • Develop annual and third quarter budget totaling $192 million in expenditures, and $30 million in revenues and other funding streams;
  • Provide timely financial projections, reports, and identify spending trends;
  • Meet with various command staff to compile relevant data for individual budget, and items to be considered for third quarter budget review submissions;
  • Ensure compliance with count policies and procedures, and any state and federal mandates;
  • Build and maintain relationships with other county departments;
  • Manage staff daily performance and annual performance evaluations;
  • Make recommendations for process improvements.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of governmental budgeting and fiscal management and the ability to apply them to complex governmental systems;
  • Considerable knowledge of federal, state and county policies, procedures, regulations and legislation impacting the maintenance of financial records;
  • Ability to effectively supervise and coordinate the activities of staff;
  • Ability to develop and implement fiscal policies and procedures.
Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in accounting; or a bachelor's degree in business administration or related field that has been supplemented by at least six credit hours of basic accounting principles and concepts; plus four years of professional-level finance or business administration experience. A master's degree in a related field or CPA may substitute for one year of experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Appointee must demonstrate financial responsibility in personal finances as a condition of employment and will be required to complete a criminal background check and a credit check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in finance or accounting;
  • Ability to review, interpret large and complex amounts of fiscal and accounting data and make solid recommendations;
  • Ability to conduct financial studies and prepare complex financial reports;
  • Ability to present financial and accounting data in a clear and concise manner to varying audiences;
  • Two years of experience working within the financial module of an enterprise resource planning system (ERP) such as SAP, PeopleSoft, Lawson, etc.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job is generally sedentary in nature. Employee needs visual acuity to read data on computer monitor; be able to operate keyboard driven equipment, and may also be required to lift up to 30 pounds. Duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
