PenFed is looking for a Benefits Manager in Alexandria, VA. This position will be responsible for managing, planning and analyzing the operations of PenFed’s group health & welfare and retirement benefit programs while ensuring that excellent customer service and quality benefit plans are provided to all employees.  This position is the primary point of contact for group benefits administration across the organization as well as for plan vendors and third party administrators.   This position will administer employee benefit plans including eligibility and enrollment, billing and reconciliation, and coordination of Open Enrollment activities and Wellness Programs.


Essential Functions

    Responsible for the day-to-day administration of all group benefits, including processing of all timely audits and benefit invoices (retirement plans, medical, dental, vision, ancillary, COBRA, FSA, HSA, and other voluntary plans).  Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements including ERISA, PPACA, COBRA notifications, HIPAA certifications, distribution of annual reporting and notifications for the retirement plans and health & welfare plans. Reevaluate current processes for all STD/LTD claims and adherence to FMLA and worker’s compensation rules collaborating with HR team and managers.  Develop recommendation for long-term functionality. Collaborate with the HR shared services team in daily tasks related to group benefits administration including improving, managing automated processes, and assisting employees utilizing benefits administration and HRIS systems. Work alongside HRIS in managing benefits administration system and vendors. Point of contact to interpret plan documents for issue resolution; acts as liaison between employees and insurance carriers during claim escalations. Manage relationships with external benefits vendors to ensure quality services are received. Responsible for compiling monthly invoicing for benefits plans, and subsequent cost allocations to subsidiary companies.  Participate in annual renewals of contracts and plans to include working with third party brokers/consultants and internal departments on annual budget requirements. Coordinate efforts across multiple sites and branches for annual open enrollment – including communications, systems set-up, reporting to vendors as well as summary of enrollment results for senior management.

Education and Experience

Equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.

    Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or a related field is preferred.   Minimum of 8 years’ experience in benefits administration with at least 4 of those years in a leadership or management type of role.  Broad HR functional experience in addition to benefits administration. Proven experience with championing change is required.

Supervisory Responsibility

    This position will supervise employees.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to an indoor office setting with moderate noise.



Limited travel to various worksites is required.
