JOB SUMMARY:

The President has ordered a government-wide hiring freeze subject to certain limited exceptions. This position is subject to the hiring freeze. The Defense Health Agency, National Capital Region Medical Directorate (NCR-MD) is the future of Military Medicine- a partnership in World Class Medical Healthcare. The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Dilorenzo Clinic and the Joint Pathology Center, provide world class medical services to the nation's service members and their families.

About the Position:

The Nutrition Services Department at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center leads military healthcare in providing comprehensive nutrition services to all DoD beneficiaries in order to prevent disease, restore health, and optimize readiness.
The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of walking and standing while coordinating and conducting training and visiting areas within/outside a medical treatment facility to discuss issues with professional staff, vendors, and other professionals. Work is primarily performed in an office setting. Occasional work is performed on patient wards or in areas of the food service operation (kitchen, supply areas).

The full performance level for this position is GS-0630-12. The position may be filled at the GS11 or GS12 level.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Degree: The Dietitian occupation has specific educational requirements which apply to all positions. From the options below, select the one which describes your educational background. Education above high school level must have been completed in a U.S. college, university, or other educational institution that has been accredited by one of the accredited agencies or associations recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education. Transcripts are required at the time of application.
The applicant MUST have a degree in dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) in effect at the time of graduation. Information on ADA-Approved curricula may be obtained from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 430 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60611. Registration Requirement: This position requires professional registration as a Dietitian from the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), or formerly known as The American Dietetic Association (ADA). (Note: You must provide a copy of your registration.)
Experience required for the GS11 level: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Working with automated nutrition management information systems, updating electronic/data such as; recipes, menu boards, etc. Assists in evaluating nutrition management information systems software and provide recommendations for enhancements.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For the GS11 level, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below.
Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in, dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, nutrition informatics, to include internship rotation experience or related science. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-11: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts).
Experience required for the GS12 level: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Managing a nutrition management information system, to include developing, updating and analyzing electronic databases; such as department website, integrated diet manuals, etc.; Evaluate nutrition management information systems software and recommend enhancements; Administering food operations and clinical nutrition for a medical treatment facility; and educate others on nutrition informatics related topics. NOTE: There is no education substitution for the GS12 level.
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Skill in analyzing nutrition information systems
  •  Skill in implementing information systems
  •  Ability to conduct training
  •  Ability to evaluate food operations & patient meal service systems
